MOFA - Ministry of Foreign Affairs Liberia

MONROVIA – The Government of Liberia has strongly denied a fabricated social media statement falsely attributed to Ambassador Lewis Brown, warning that the misinformation poses serious risks to Liberia’s diplomatic standing and the safety of its citizens—particularly those residing in the Gulf and broader Middle East region.

In a release issued Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that the circulating statement, which purportedly condemned recent military actions in the Middle East and pledged support to the Islamic Republic of Iran, is entirely false and inconsistent with Liberia’s foreign policy.

“The statement is fabricated and wholly inconsistent with Liberia’s foreign policy and diplomatic practice,” the Ministry declared, categorically distancing both Ambassador Brown and the Government from the claims.

Only Official Position Was Through A3 at UN

The Ministry emphasized that Liberia’s only formal pronouncement on the matter was made within the framework of the African “A3” bloc at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) session on February 28, 2026.

As a current Non-Permanent Member of the UNSC, Liberia works alongside its African partners to promote common continental positions on issues before the Council.

“Liberia has only spoken once as part of the A3 statement made at the UNSC session. Liberia has issued no other statement from Monrovia or from the Permanent Mission in New York,” the Ministry stressed.

Officials described the fake statement as reckless and potentially dangerous, noting that it directly contradicts Liberia’s longstanding diplomatic posture of neutrality, multilateral cooperation, and adherence to international law.

National Security Investigation Underway

The Government confirmed that security agencies are actively investigating the source of the false publication and warned that those responsible will face legal consequences once identified.

“The Government of Liberia calls upon those carrying out such dangerous acts against the country to desist, and wishes to inform that the law will take its course when such individuals are identified,” the release stated.

Authorities also urged media institutions and the public to verify information through official government channels before sharing or amplifying unverified claims.

Deep Concern for Liberians in the Gulf Region

Beyond correcting the misinformation, the Ministry underscored what it described as its most pressing concern: the safety and well-being of Liberians living in Middle Eastern countries currently affected by heightened military tensions.

“The Government of Liberia underscores its deep concern for the safety and well-being of Liberians in the Middle East,” the statement emphasized.

The Ministry urged Liberians residing in affected countries to remain vigilant, follow official communications, and strictly adhere to instructions issued by their respective Liberian embassies.

According to the Ministry, Liberian diplomatic missions across the region have either issued or are in the process of issuing country-specific advisories designed to guide citizens on safety protocols and emergency measures.

“All Liberians residing in the Middle East are encouraged to contact the Embassy responsible for their country of residence to obtain specific guidance and updates,” the Ministry said.

Officials noted that the advisories are intended to provide timely, practical information relevant to citizens’ security amid the evolving regional situation.

Protecting Liberia’s Diplomatic Integrity

Diplomatic observers say the swift clarification reflects Liberia’s sensitivity as a member of the United Nations Security Council and the need to maintain credibility in international affairs.

The Ministry’s response signals a dual objective: protecting Liberia’s diplomatic integrity on the global stage while ensuring that Liberian nationals abroad—particularly in volatile regions—are not placed at risk by misinformation.

As tensions continue in parts of the Middle East, authorities say the Government’s priority remains clear: safeguarding Liberian lives while upholding responsible and principled foreign policy.
