The Ministry of Youth and Sports on Tuesday welcomed a high-level delegation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at the Samuel Kanyon Doe (SKD) Sports Complex, marking a major step forward in Liberia’s efforts to strengthen its sports infrastructure.
The visit is part of ongoing bilateral engagements aimed at deepening cooperation in sports development between Liberia and Saudi Arabia. During their tour of the SKD Complex, the delegation held strategic discussions with Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports G. Andy Quamie, Assistant Minister Marvee Gray, and other senior ministry officials on plans to upgrade and expand sports facilities across the country.
Central to the discussions was a proposed US$30 million investment aimed at transforming Liberia’s sports landscape. Of this amount, US$1.5 million has been earmarked for the renovation of the SKD Sports Complex in Paynesville, a key venue for national sporting activities.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry, Deputy Minister Quamie described the engagement as a clear demonstration of the Government of Liberia’s commitment to revitalizing sports infrastructure nationwide. He emphasized that planned renovations at SKD would significantly improve conditions for athletes and enhance Liberia’s capacity to host both national and international competitions.
Beyond the SKD upgrade, the remaining US$28.5 million under the broader initiative is expected to fund the construction of a modern stadium at Tower Hill along the Roberts International Airport (RIA) Highway in Margibi County.
Liberia’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Mr. Amara S. Sackor, disclosed that the proposed stadium project falls under a framework agreement signed between FIFA and the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), which supports the construction of stadiums and sports facilities in developing countries.
According to Ambassador Sackor, the first step in the process will be a comprehensive feasibility study to determine whether the project will involve a full renovation of existing structures or the construction of an entirely new state-of-the-art stadium.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports expressed gratitude to the Saudi delegation for their visit and reaffirmed its commitment to building partnerships that will elevate sports development in Liberia.
