RIA, MARGIBI COUNTY – The Government and people of Liberia are proud to welcome Her Excellency Dame Sandra Mason, President of Barbados, and her official team to Liberia. This important visit is hosted by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.
President Mason has already met with President Boakai at the Executive Mansion. During their meeting, they discussed about ways to strengthen the relationship between Liberia and Barbados, especially in tourism and trade. To honor her visit, President Mason on Friday, May 9, received the symbolic Key to the City of Monrovia during a special luncheon at the Monrovia City Hall.
This visit is meaningful because of the long history between Liberia and Barbados. As part of her Friday’s itinerary, President Mason met with young people on the historic Providence Island, an important place in Liberia’s founding. This event highlighted the cultural and historical ties the two countries have shared for over 160 years, based on their shared heritage and struggles for freedom.

President Mason’s visit’s celebration continues on May 10 in Crozierville, a peaceful town in Montserrado County. Crozierville was founded in 1865 by freed people from Barbados. They came to Liberia in search of a land on a called the “Brig Cora”. They settled near Receptacle Creek and played a big role in building Liberia’s early society-especially in education, religion, government, media, and culture.
This year’s theme is “Crozierville @160: Our History, Heritage & Diversity.” The program will include a “Made in Liberia” Trade Expo, cultural performances, the naming of the Township Square, and a reunion with descendants of the Barbadian settlers. The event celebrates Crozierville’s rich history and reminds us of the strong ties between Liberia and Barbados.
President Mason’s visit shows Barbados’s desire to build even stronger cultural and economic ties with Liberia. It is a reminder of our shared past and a hopeful step toward a better future for both nations.
