
BEIJING, CHINA – The Beijing Union of Liberian Student (BULS) headed by its President Nasa Thompson with support from the Embassy of the Republic of Liberia in China hosted a vibrant Flag Day celebration on August 24, bringing together diplomats, students, and friends of Liberia for an afternoon of sports and cultural exchange. The event featured a friendly football match that saw Liberian diplomats and students face off against international guests in a closely contested game that ended 3-2 in favor of the visitors.

Mr. J. Wesley Washington, Deputy Chief of Mission and Minister Counselor, who represented the embassy opened the ceremonies by extending warm greetings from H.E. Dudley McKinley Thomas, Ambassador of the Republic of Liberia to the People’s Republic of China, who though unable to attend the program due to pressing official assignments abroad, sent his best wishes and emphasized the importance of upholding national traditions. Furthermore, the attendees were informed of recent diplomatic transitions, noting that Diplomats Mr. Moses Barclay, Mr. Mulbah G. Kawoi, and Mrs. Musu Massaquoi had been transferred to new missions and have been replaced by diplomats who were warmly welcomed.

Moreover, the afternoon continued with traditional Liberian cuisine, music, and dancing, creating an atmosphere of cultural pride and cross-cultural friendship. The embassy reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strong partnerships with the Liberian student communities throughout China, emphasizing the importance of sustaining national traditions while abroad.

The 2025 Flag Day celebration in Beijing was declared a resounding success, perfectly capturing the essence of Liberian pride and the strong sense of community among its citizens in China.

About Liberian Flag Day: The National Flag Day is observed annually on August 24th to commemorate the adoption of the Liberian flag in 1847. The flag, consisting of its eleven red and white stripes represents the signatories of the Liberian Declaration of Independence and the single white star on a blue field symbolizing the first independence nation on the continent of Africa, is a powerful emblem of the nation’s sovereignty and history.
