Dr. Chris Dugbeh Nyan and his colleagues from NPHIL attending the Africa CDC Mpox gathring in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA – Dr. Dugbeh Chris Nyan, leading a delegation from Liberia’s National Public Health Institute (NPHIL), participated in a crucial workshop during the Africa-CDC meeting focused on addressing the Mpox outbreak.

This gathering brought together experts and officials to discuss strategies for enhancing vaccine production and research within Africa.

The workshop, centered on the Mpox Vaccine campaign, aimed to evaluate the current supply of vaccines while optimizing response efforts to the ongoing outbreak.

Key discussions included the importance of implementing robust research and development (R&D) initiatives tailored to the African context. Dr. Nyan emphasized the need for African scientists to take the lead in vaccine development to reduce dependency on external sources.

The delegation that accompanied Dr. Nyan included notable figures: Philip Kerkula from NPHIL, Bakary Sonko representing Africa-CDC, Lasee Colee from the Ministry of Health, and Jeremy S. Sesay from WHO.

Together, they discussed collaborative approaches to strengthen health responses across the continent and highlighted the urgency of prioritizing local innovation in vaccine production.

As the Mpox outbreak continues to impact communities, the efforts led by Dr. Nyah and his team mark a significant step toward improving public health safety in Liberia and the wider African region.

With hashtags like #StopMpox and #PublicHealthSafety, the partnership underscores a united front against infectious diseases that pose a threat to public health.

The ongoing commitment to R&D in Africa seeks not just to respond to the current outbreak but also to lay the groundwork for future preparedness and resilience against similar health crises.
