Buchanan, Grand Bassa County – The Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA) on Wednesday, August 20, officially opened its Leadership Retreat in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, with a strong call for unity, strategic planning, and reforms aimed at building a more efficient and accountable legal body.
Delivering the opening remarks, Cllr. Bornor M. Varmah, National President of the LNBA, described the retreat as a “historic milestone” in the Association’s journey. He said the gathering represents a time for reflection, planning, and reaffirmation of the Bar’s commitment to defending the rule of law and maintaining the independence of the legal profession in Liberia.
“This is not only about setting policies but about defining the legacy of the LNBA at this crucial juncture in our nation’s history,” Cllr. Varmah said, urging members to approach the discussions with vision and unity.
The three-day retreat, which runs up to August 23rd, will focus on several key issues, including the adoption of a National Welfare Policy for lawyers, the review and approval of a three-year Strategic Plan, and the establishment of policies to guide both local and international engagements of the Bar.
“These are not mere administrative matters,” Varmah stressed. “They are fundamental to building an efficient, transparent, and forward-looking Bar Association.”
The LNBA President also expressed appreciation to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) for sponsoring the retreat and for their continued partnership.
He emphasized that the support from international partners reinforces the Bar’s role in promoting democracy, justice, and peace in Liberia.
With judges, magistrates, legal professionals, and international representatives in attendance, the retreat is expected to set the tone for a more impactful LNBA over the next three years.
