LTA in rural Liberia

SUEHN MECCA, BOMI COUNTY – The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), through its Universal Access initiative, has begun restoring non-functional telecom towers and expanding coverage in underserved rural communities, starting with Suehn Mecca in Bomi County.

The initiative includes the reactivation of existing towers, the installation of Starlink connectivity, and support for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to install their signals. As part of the rollout, 50 mobile phones are being distributed to residents in the affected areas.

Acting Commissioner for Consumer Affairs and Universal Access, Patrick Honnah, said the intervention aims to close Liberia’s digital divide. “These are places where service has been down for a long time. The Universal Access Fund allows us to reactivate towers and bring back connectivity,” he noted.

For their part, residents in Suehn Mecca expressed joy and relief, noting that for years they had to walk long distances and climb hills just to make a phone call.

“We’ve been out of network for so long. This is a big relief,” said Township Commissioner Saymonlu B. Dorley. “We thank the LTA and the government for bringing us back in touch with the world.” The project will continue across Cape Mount and other underserved parts of the country as LTA seeks to expand access to communication and digital services.
