Nimba County Senator Samuel G. Kogar taking the oath of Office for the Senate

MONROVIA – The National Elections Commission (NEC) has formally acknowledged a vacant seat in the 55th National Legislature, as announced by the House of Representatives.

In a letter dated 26 May 2025, addressed to NEC Chairperson Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah, the House revealed that the vacancy is due to the election of Representative Samuel G. Kogar from Electoral District 5 in Nimba County. The letter, signed by Chief Clerk Mildred N. Sayon, directs the NEC to take appropriate action in accordance with its legal mandate.

As outlined in Article 37 of the 1986 Constitution of Liberia, the presiding officer is required to notify the Elections Commission within 30 days of a legislative vacancy. Following this notification, the NEC has up to 90 days to conduct a by-election, unless the vacancy occurs within 90 days of general elections.

The NEC is set to undertake the necessary steps to fill this vacancy in due course.
