MONROVIA – In a significant move aimed at reshaping the future of Liberia, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai launched the Presidential Vacation Enrichment Program and Community Service Projects Thursday, July 3, at the Executive Pavilion in Monrovia.
The initiative, themed “Learning is Leadership: Investing in Youth for Liberia’s 21st Century Transformation,” seeks to empower young Liberians by enhancing their educational opportunities and promoting civic responsibility.
During the highly attended launch event, President Boakai emphasized that the future of Liberia lies in the hands of its youth, urging the nation to invest heavily in education and community engagement.
“I stand before you to unleash a promise—that in this 21st century, Liberia will rise through the power of its youth,” he stated, affirming the need for a robust educational framework amid concerning statistics surrounding literacy and numeracy in the country.
The program introduces several key components aimed at addressing the educational deficits and enhancing youth participation in national development. Central to the initiative is the Ministry of State Scholarship Program, which currently supports over 400 students at 20 universities and technical colleges throughout Liberia.
This scholarship program is designed to provide access to education for students from various backgrounds, fostering a diverse learning environment.
In a bid to create a sustainable education ecosystem, President Boakai announced the recruitment of 100 youth teachers from scholarship recipients, who will serve as mentors, nurturing the next generation of leaders.
The initiative also includes a focus on environmental sustainability by promoting youth-led green entrepreneurship. One notable aspect is the production of recycled school bags that convert waste into jobs, highlighting a dual commitment to economic and environmental stewardship.
Mandatory community service for all scholarship recipients was outlined as a further pillar of the initiative, emphasizing that with opportunity comes responsibility. President Boakai remarked, “These scholarships are not just about imbibing theories; they are about nation-building,” and called on the youth to bear the mantle of leadership now rather than waiting for a distant tomorrow.
