MONROVIA – In a passionate address delivered during the unveiling of a new office space on 9th Street, Julius Kanubah, the President of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), called on union members to take charge of building their own headquarters.
Emphasizing collective responsibility, Kanubah stated, “The task of constructing our own headquarters is on us.”
Kanubah’s remarks came as he expressed confidence in the union’s ability to generate the necessary resources internally, urging media owners to fulfill their financial obligations through shared contributions.
This commitment is seen as a crucial step toward turning the longstanding dream of a PUL headquarters into reality.
“To begin this vital process, I am pleased to announce the formation of a committee dedicated to spearheading our construction initiative,” said Kanubah.
The committee comprises prominent figures including Estala Liberty, former Director General of the Liberia Broadcasting System, and Peter Quaqua, Executive Director, among others.
The President also raised the topic of a contentious US$100,000 donation from the former Ellen Johnson Sirleaf administration, initially intended to support the construction of the headquarters. The donation has been a subject of debate among union members for years.
Former PUL President Peter Quaqua acknowledged the donation during his speech but opted not to delve deeply into the issue, prompting remarks from fellow member Jerolinmick Matthew Piah, who called for transparency regarding the use of these funds.
Support for the construction was echoed by Cecelia Clarke, spokesperson for the Liberia National Police, who represented the Inspector General. She pledged the police’s commitment while also advocating for the reinstatement of her and others’ names dropped from full membership.
The event attracted a diverse group of attendees, including media members, past PUL presidents, government officials, and representatives such as the Minister of Information, all voicing their commitment to the headquarters project. With this rallying call, Kanubah aims to unite PUL members around a common goal, reinforcing the idea that the dream of a dedicated headquarters is within reach if all stakeholders actively participate in the initiative.
