MONROVIA, Liberia — The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) will on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, formally relaunch the National Media Council (NMC), a multi‑stakeholder self‑regulatory body mandated to enforce the Code of Ethics and Conduct for journalists and media institutions.
The Council’s reactivation signals a renewed commitment to professional standards, public trust, and press freedom in Liberia’s evolving media landscape. The nine‑member body will draw representatives from the journalism community, civil society, government, academia, women’s organizations, and religious institutions—an inclusive design intended to bolster credibility and independence.
Evolving from the former Media Complaints Committee and the Grievance and Ethics Committee, the reconstituted NMC will adjudicate complaints related to the work and conduct of journalists and media outlets, provide remedies, and publish decisions. In line with the PUL Code of Ethics and Conduct, the Council will also have authority to sanction journalists and media institutions for violations of professional standards.
“The inclusion of institutions such as the Office of the Ombudsman, the Liberia Council of Churches, the National Muslim Council of Liberia, the National Civil Society Council of Liberia, and the Women NGO Secretariat will help instill public confidence in the Council and elevate ethical compliance across the sector,” the PUL said.
The relaunch will feature a panel discussion on media self‑regulation in the age of digital media and citizen journalism, reflecting new challenges around misinformation, online harassment, and rapidly changing content ecosystems. The PUL said effective self‑regulation is vital to defend press freedom while ensuring fairness, accuracy, and accountability in reporting.
