Grand Cape Mount County Dabah Varpilah

Grand Cape, Mount County – Senator Dabah M. Varplah has urged the Liberian Senate to thoroughly examine employment practices in Liberia, particularly regarding positions held by non-Liberians that could be filled by qualified Liberians.

In a recent statement on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, Senator Varplah emphasized the importance of relying on accurate statistics rather than arbitrary figures to address the issue of job vacancies in the country.

She said there is a critical need to assess the detailed report that has been submitted and identify those roles occupied by non-Liberians, which ought to be filled by Liberians.

“We should aim to determine the actual number of such positions, which could potentially exceed 7,000.”

The senator echoed sentiments shared by fellow legislator, Senator Abraham Darius Dallon, expressing concern over the growing unemployment among Liberians despite the availability of jobs that locals are capable of performing.

Senator Varplah highlighted specific roles, such as financial managers, that could be adequately filled by Liberian graduates.

She stated that Liberia is no longer in the 1960s anymore, where it was necessary to rely on foreign nationals for key positions in our economy.

The Grand Cape Mount County Senator acknowledged that Liberian universities are producing graduates every year, and it is imperative that we create job opportunities for them within their own country.

Senator Varplah also pointed to a lack of employment opportunities in concession areas, calling for the committee to revisit the statistics provided and pinpoint jobs that are suitable for Liberians.

“We must ensure that our citizens are given the chance to contribute to their own economy,” he concluded.

The senator’s remarks come amid ongoing debates about employment policies and the need for a more inclusive labor market in Liberia.
