
Monrovia – At a glittering annual awards program celebrating Liberian athletes and sports journalists, the Liberia Medicines & Health Products Regulatory Authority (LMHRA) issued a powerful call to action, urging the Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL) to become key ally in the fight against substandard and falsified medicines in Liberia.
Speaking at the event, LMHRA Managing Director, Dr. Luke L. Bawo emphasized the shared responsibility of athletes, supporting institutions, and the media in upholding the integrity of sports.
“The pursuit of excellence has, in some cases, been overshadowed by challenges that must be addressed to ensure the integrity of our sports,” he stated, further highlighting the increasing focus on transparency and ethics, particularly concerning performance-enhancing substances.
The LMHRA boss underscored his commitment to fostering an environment where health and integrity are prioritized over mere victories.

The authority then outlined several crucial ways SWAL can significantly contribute to this vital cause in publishing in-depth articles and features to educate the public and athletes about the grave dangers of substandard and falsified medicines.
Stating that sharing compelling stories of athletes whose lives have been impacted by substandard medicines, bringing a vital human element to the discussion.
According to him, investigating and exposing cases of counterfeit medications in sports, holding those responsible accountable for their actions and collaborating with anti-doping agencies to champion clean sport and underscore the paramount importance of integrity in athletic performance.
He pointed out that leveraging social media platforms to raise awareness and educate followers about the inherent risks associated with fake medications.
Dr. Bawo lauded sports writers as “not just chroniclers of events” but as “watchdogs for ethical practice, advocates for fairness, and heralds of change.” By spotlighting the importance of clean competition, sports journalists play a crucial role in safeguarding the future of sports, ensuring that triumphs are celebrated for their integrity as much as their outcome.

According to him, the LMHRA stresses that through collaboration between regulatory authorities, sports organizations, and the media, a path can be forged toward a future where athletes can thrive free from the shadow of unscrupulous practices.
