MONROVIA — The sudden death of the wife of prominent Liberian economist and political commentator Samuel P. Jackson has triggered intense public debate across Liberia, with police launching a homicide investigation while social media erupts with speculation, allegations, and demands for accountability.

Jackson’s wife, a South African national affectionately referred to by many as the “Zulu Queen,” died after reportedly sustaining a severe head injury at the couple’s residence on Old Road in Monrovia. The incident has drawn national attention due to Jackson’s status as a well-known critic of the current Liberian government.

Jackson Describes Events Leading to Wife’s Death

Speaking in an interview at his residence, Jackson said he discovered his wife lying unconscious in a pool of blood after returning home from a radio program.

“When I got home, I saw my wife lying on the edge of the bed in a pool of blood, semi-conscious or unconscious,” he said, explaining that he immediately called for help and rushed her to a hospital.

According to Jackson, doctors later determined she had suffered a brain injury likely caused by a fall.

“She had a medical condition that caused seizures. That situation has happened many times before,” he said, adding that medical records exist documenting previous incidents.

Despite efforts by medical personnel, including surgery, Jackson said his wife did not survive.

He also criticized Liberia’s health system, saying the lack of specialized medical personnel contributed to the tragedy.

“There was no brain surgeon available in the country,” he said, explaining that delays in medical response complicated efforts to save her life.

Police Open Homicide Investigation

However, the Liberia National Police (LNP) has opened what it describes as an active homicide investigation, citing physical evidence observed on the body.

Police spokesperson Sam Collins said investigators discovered injuries that raised concerns about possible foul play.

“An initial examination revealed a very deep laceration on the crown of the head,” Collins said. “We also observed bruises on the body that suggest some form of domestic assault.”

Collins confirmed that Jackson has been declared a “person of interest” in the investigation and urged him to cooperate with investigators.

“We see him as a person of interest, and he must cooperate with the Liberia National Police,” Collins said.

The police also disclosed that two employees from Jackson’s household — including a cook and a driver — were taken in for questioning after it was reported that blood at the scene had been cleaned before investigators arrived.

“Those individuals are persons of interest helping with the investigation,” Collins explained, noting that being a person of interest does not necessarily mean someone is under arrest.

Police Deployment Sparks Controversy

The investigation intensified Thursday when armed officers from the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) were deployed to Jackson’s residence.

Jackson strongly condemned the move, accusing police of intimidation.

“My wife has not been dead even ten hours and you bring armed men to surround a 73-year-old man like I’m going to run away,” he said.

He insisted the police should have obtained a search warrant before attempting to access the room where the incident occurred.

“If you have suspicion, bring a search warrant or arrest warrant,” he argued.

Police, however, said immediate action was necessary to preserve potential evidence.

“Any delay in examining the scene could contaminate the crime scene,” Collins said, explaining why investigators moved quickly.

Social Media Erupts

The incident quickly dominated discussions on Liberian social media, particularly Facebook, where thousands of users debated the circumstances of the woman’s death.

Some public figures called for a thorough and impartial investigation.

Bomi County Senator Edwin Snowe wrote that the case must be handled professionally, stating: “This is no damn politics. The police must conduct a full and impartial investigation. Sam Jackson has questions to answer.”

Others raised concerns about possible domestic violence, while some supporters argued that Jackson is being unfairly targeted because of his outspoken criticism of the government.

Liberia Broadcasting System Director-General Eugene L. Fahngon questioned the circumstances surrounding the injury, writing that the police should immediately secure the crime scene and investigate the matter thoroughly.

Meanwhile, several activists urged caution, emphasizing that conclusions should not be drawn before investigators complete their work.

Political Undertones

The case has also taken on political overtones, with some supporters of opposition political groups criticizing the police deployment at Jackson’s residence and accusing authorities of acting aggressively toward a government critic.

But police have rejected those claims.

“We are investigating an alleged homicide case,” Collins said. “The police will approach the investigation professionally and with an open mind.”

Autopsy Expected

Authorities say an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

Police have placed a hold on the body to prevent its removal until the examination is completed.

“We take this matter very seriously,” Collins said. “The public will be informed as the investigation progresses.”

For now, the death of Jackson’s wife remains one of the most talked-about incidents in Liberia, with the country awaiting the outcome of the police investigation amid widespread public scrutiny and emotional reactions.
