Cllr. Bornor Varmah has now taken over the leadership of WABA

MONROVIA – The West African Bar Association (WABA) has officially announced the resignation of its President, Mr. Ousmane Bouba Traore, effective immediately. Mr. Traore, who cited personal reasons for his departure, has had a brief tenure characterized by a steadfast commitment to legal integrity and the promotion of human rights across West Africa.

In a virtual meeting held by the Executive Committee, Cllr. Bornor M. Varmah, Vice President of WABA, was appointed as the Acting President to ensure a smooth transition of leadership. Cllr. Varmah, an esteemed member of the Liberian Bar Association and a prominent international trade lawyer, expressed his gratitude to Mr. Traore for his service and emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law during this pivotal time.

“I am honored to assume this responsibility at such a critical juncture,” Cllr. Varmah stated. “Our mission to promote the maintenance of the rule of law and ensure the independence, incorruptibility, and impartiality of the judiciary remains our top priority. I look forward to building on the strong foundation that Mr. Traore has laid for the advancement of justice and regional legal integration in West Africa.”

The Executive Committee of WABA reaffirms its commitment to the association’s objectives of fostering professionalism and human rights advocacy across the sub-region. The collective focus will continue to be on ensuring that the legal framework in West Africa is strong, just, and democratic.

In accordance with WABA’s Constitution, all Bar Associations in West Africa are hereby notified of this leadership transition. A General Meeting will be convened in Nigeria at a date to be announced, where further discussions and strategic objectives will be outlined.

The Executive Committee wishes to thank all members for their continued support and engagement as WABA navigates this transitional period and reinforces its commitment to promoting justice in West Africa.
