MONROVIA – The Progressive Students Alliance (PROSA) at the University of Liberia has officially endorsed the upcoming July 17 protest organized by the civic advocacy group STAND.
This endorsement was announced during a spirited ceremony at the Center Street Cemetery, where PROSA’s leadership expressed deep concern over the current administration’s focus on issues they deem misplaced.
PROSA Chairman, addressing a gathering of students and supporters, specifically called out President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for prioritizing the reburial of former presidents, including Samuel K. Doe, at the expense of addressing the urgent needs of ordinary Liberians.
He stated, “It is unacceptable for the Liberian government to spend public funds on reburial ceremonies while many of our citizens are struggling to afford basic funeral arrangements for their loved ones.”
The chairman’s remarks resonated with the crowd, reflecting widespread frustration with the government’s fiscal priorities. He urged all Liberians, regardless of their political affiliations, to participate in the July 17 protest, emphasizing the need for unity in demanding accountability and reform.
“This government must understand that honoring former leaders should not come at the cost of ignoring the current suffering of the Liberian people,” he declared.
The upcoming march aims to draw attention to a variety of pressing national issues, including economic hardship, systemic corruption, and the pervasive lack of accountability in governance. Organizers anticipate a significant turnout, with several civil society organizations and student groups pledging their participation alongside ordinary citizens who share a collective desire for change. The peaceful protest is seen as a crucial moment for civic engagement as Liberia grapples with ongoing challenges. As the July 17 date approaches, tensions may rise, but the calls for justice and reform grow louder among the populace, eager for their voices to be heard in the corridors of power.
