Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung on Tuesday welcomed Dr. Mady Biaye, the new UNFPA Country Representative

MONROVIA – Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung on Tuesday welcomed Dr. Mady Biaye, the new UNFPA Country Representative, during a courtesy visit at the planning meeting for the upcoming official launch of Liberia’s Legislative Committee on Population and Development (LCPD).

Dr. Biaye, a Senegalese national, brings extensive experience in population and development work across Africa, according to a statement posted on the Vice President’s Office Facebook page. Before his posting to Liberia, he served as UNFPA Country Representative in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he led programs promoting reproductive health, gender equality, and youth empowerment.

The LCPD is chaired by Senator Dabah Varpilah, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Health, and co-chaired by Representative Rugie Barry of Montserrado County. Senator Priscilla Cooper serves as Secretary of the Committee.

In attendance were the UNFPA Deputy Country Representative, other senior UNFPA staff, and staff of the Office of the Vice President.

Vice President Koung congratulated Dr. Biaye on his new assignment and reaffirmed the Government of Liberia’s commitment to working closely with UNFPA in advancing national priorities on population and development.

Dr. Biaye expressed appreciation to the Vice President and the Government of Liberia for the warm reception and reaffirmed UNFPA’s commitment to supporting the Government’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.

During the visit, Dr. Biaye also visited the Office of the Senate President Pro Tempore, Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence, where he held discussions with the Pro Tempore. The Office of the Vice President extends its best wishes to Dr. Biaye and looks forward to a strengthened partnership that promotes the health, rights, and well-being of all Liberians. The LCPD is scheduled to be officially launched on October 29, 2025, in Monrovia.
