
MONROVIA – As part of celebration marking the 22nd anniversary of the signing of the historic Accra Comprehensive Peace Agreement for Liberia, a lecture series has been organized by the Office for the Establishment of War and Economic Crimes Court for Liberia on the importance of the day.
On Wednesday, August 13, Nobel Peace Laureate and renowned peace activist Leymah Gbowee will deliver the first of the lecture series to Liberian schoolchildren ahead of the Day, On August 18. 2003, Liberian warring factions, Registered Political Parties and Civil Society Organizations signed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement brokered by the international community which brought an end to the war.
Gbowee, whose leadership of the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace was instrumental in securing the agreement, will speak to students about the importance of peace, civic responsibility, and the role of youth in shaping Liberia’s future.
The lecture series will be held at the Office for the Establishment of War and Economic Crimes Court (OEWECC) with students expected to attend from across Montserrado County. The Lecture Series is part of OWECC’s broader initiative to integrate peace education into Liberia’s transitional justice process with a reflection on the country’s journey from war to recovery. On Monday, August 18, 2003, President Nyuma Boakai’s Advisor on Foreign Affairs Hon. Dr. Augustine Konneh will serve as second lecturer. OWECC-L Executive Director Dr. Jallah Barbu says the lecture series will also serve as a platform to promote dialogue around the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court, a key recommendation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
