MONROVIA – Montserrado County Senator Saah Joseph had been known among partisans, supporters, followers and stalwarts of the former ruling Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) that later metamorphosized into the Coalition for Democratic having formed alliances with former National Patriotic Party (NPP) of Charles Taylor, Liberia People Democratic Party (LPDP) of former Speaker Alex Tyler and other splinter parties, as the Ebola Hero, a name that was coined for him during the heat of the deadly pandemic in 2014 in Liberia and other Mano River countries – Guinea and Sierra Leone – respectively.

When news emerged that Senator Joseph was about to break ties with the former ruling CDC and launch his own political party, coined People’s Action Party (PAP), little did ordinary CDCians (as members of CDC are called), stalwarts and the hierarchy of the party, including its political leader Geroge Weah know that their “Ebola Hero” would spill the beans and ‘let the cat out of the bag’, targeting what he termed as ‘dubious dealings’ of the former ruling party during its six years of governance.

In his exposé recently on the popular night radio talk show – Spoon Talk – hosted by Stanton Witherspoon of the Spoon Network, Senator Joseph made startling revelations that shocked Liberians, foreign residents and the global village about the ‘dubious’ dealings of the former ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) regime under the watch of former international football icon, George Weah, who the Senator said was aided and abetted by his friends and cronies in organized scams that brought public and international disrepute to Liberia as was seen by the international investment community.

The Montserrado County Senator, now a brainchild of the newly-organized political party — People’s Action Party — PAP, began by warning Liberians that former President Weah and his friends and cronies are dangerous to Liberia and should never be allowed to take state power again.

Sen. Joseph, who rose to political prominence through the CDC, is among a growing list of officials and former allies now breaking away from the party following its loss in the 2023 elections to current President Joseph Nyuma Boakai. Joseph, a longtime stalwart of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), who has now distanced himself from the party, said he was devastated when he heard the news of the shady deals former President Weah and cronies were orchestrating against the interest of Liberia and international investors.

Senator Joseph’s Allegations against the former ruling Coalition for Democratic Change Gov’t.

Senator Saah Joseph has setup the People’s Action Party

During the Spoon Talk show, Senator Joseph alleged the followings:

•    CDC Officials Demanded US$30M Kickback; stalled US$100M Investment

According to the Montserrado County Senator’s allegation, officials in ex-President George Weah’s Administration demanded a US$30 million kickback that ultimately blocked a US$100 million foreign investment. Sen. Joseph said an Israeli investor had expressed interest in bringing US$100 million to Liberia during Weah’s presidency, but was turned away after being asked for the multimillion-dollar kickback. “Too many things happened,” Joseph told the panel.

He revealed that the investor told him that during his visit to Liberia, officials from the CDC government asked for US$30 million before allowing the investment to proceed. “Stanton, when I got that information despite being a Senator, I went down on my knees in New York, pleading with the investor to forgive us and come back,” he said, referring Spoon Talk host Stanton Witherspoon to speak with the man behind the investment.

However, Sen. Joseph said that through his latest efforts, the investor has agreed to revisit the investment opportunity and is expected to work with the current government of President Boakai to prioritize projects that benefit the Liberian people.

“For now, it is not about elections in Liberia,” Joseph said. “It is about the people that are suffering.” He emphasized the difficult conditions many Liberians continue to face and said national focus should be placed on the hardships ordinary citizens are faced with.

•    Weah and his team of Friends and Cronies Demanded US$10M from Bulgarian Investors for US$500M Investment

Senator Saah Joseph also made another startling revelation that Bulgarian investors came to Liberia during Weah’s regime to invest over US$500 million, and the Senate passed the Concession. However, the Senator disclosed that Weah and his team requested again that they pay US$10 million before the House of Representatives acts on the concession. “The concession didn’t pass in the House of Representatives because the investors refused to pay the bribe.”

•    Former Pres. Weah Didn’t Speak to Me for Four out of His Six Years in Power

Former President George Weah

Senator Saah Halie Joseph was ranking member of the Coalition for Democratic and also the Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Executive during former president Weah’s regime. As Chair of the Senate Committee on Executive, he was the liaison of the Senate to the Executive and in most instances in terms of coordination with the Executive was the first in line of contact.

But it was shocking to listeners when Senator Joseph made the revelation on Spoon Talk that night that former President George Weah didn’t speak to him for four years during his six-year presidency, even though he was the Chair of the Executive at the Liberian Senate.

•    Members of the CDC burned my house after the Elections

In another allegation during the Spoon Talk Show, Senator Joseph disclosed that it was some members of the former ruling CDC party who burned his home right after the election because he got more votes in Montserrado County than former President Weah during the 2023 election. “They tried to kill me on several occasions. It was not my intention to get more votes than Weah, but the people refused him,” he revealed.

•    Some members of the CDC drugged former Chairman Mulbah Morlu

Former Congress for Democratic Change Chairman Mulbah Morlu

Barely a year into the regime of the former Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) headed by President George Weah, former CDC Chairman fell out with his party-political leader and standard bearer, George Weah, who had by then was elected President of Liberia. Morlu alleged and accused the former President of personally diverting monies intended for Liberia to his personal use and also alleged that he slept with every female he appointed or gave a job to in his Administration. When Morlu was confronted by die-hard CDCians, he said his statement was made due to influence alcohol, referencing his allegations as ‘Liquor Talk’. Former President Weah sidelined Morlu for the rest of his six years presidency, while officials of the government ostracized the former CDC Chairman.

And so, when Senator Joseph made the allegation that “Some members of the CDC drugged former Chairman of the CDC Mulbah Morlu, also recorded him while he was undressed, and threatened to kill him,” listeners and Liberians were taken aback with the ‘Liquor Talk’ scenario that made the former CDC Chairman to fall out with his party and their political leader and standard, George Weah. It is history now as Liberians can attest how Morlu was treated badly and isolated for the remainer of president Weah’s regime.

•    Senator Joseph’s Warning to Liberians ahead of 2029 Elections

With just few handfuls of allegations with him going into more explosive allegations against former President George Weah and his cronies, the Montserrado County, Saah Joseph, has warned Liberians that Weah and his cronies are very dangerous to Liberia and they should never be allowed to return to state power again. He noted the worst to will happen to the country if these greedy and self-seeking individuals were to be given state power to steer the ship of state in the country.

However, his critics say the Senator is lambasting his former political leader because he has organized a political party that he will contest the presidency on in the 2029 elections. But the Senator said his revelation is not about the 2029 elections but for the wellbeing of the Liberian people so that they cannot make the same old mistake of 2017 when they elected Weah to office only to come and milk the country for himself, his cronies and family members.

CDC Frm. Campaign Spokesman Says the Damage Being Caused to CDC Seems ‘Uncontrollable’

Weah’s party’s campaign spokesman, Cllr. Kanio Bai Gbala, during the 2023 General Elections

Moments after a former diehard executive member of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), Senator Saah Joseph, resigned, the 2023 Campaign Spokesman of the party, Cllr. Kanio Bai Gbala, has cast doubt and uncertainty about CDC’s political future, likening it to a medical term “haemorrhaging,” which means “to bleed profusely or to lose uncontrollable blood as a result of a damage to the blood vessels.”

Cllr. Gbala asserted, “First Doctor, then T-Five, and now Saah Joseph. The haemorrhaging seems uncontrollable.”

The apparent reference by the 2023 Campaign Spokesman is being made to the successive exit of former CDC Chairman Mulbah Morlu, Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah, and now Senator Saah Joseph who just resigned and announced a new political party called “People’s Action Party – PAP”.

Former CDC Rep. Solomon George Praises President Boakai’s Leadership Style, Describes Weah As “Dictatorial”

As if the criticisms and lambasting done against the political interest of the former ruling CDC government was not enough, one of its former lawmakers in the House of Representatives, Solomon George of Montserrado County Electoral District #7 publicly commended President Joseph Boakai and his administration, calling him a genuine servant leader.

Speaking on a local TV show in Monrovia, George differentiated Boakai’s leadership style from that of former President George Weah, whom he criticized for his authoritarian approach to governance.

He expressed his respect for President Boakai’s dedication to public service and improving the lives of the Liberian people. George highlighted Boakai’s humility, empathy, and commitment to addressing the community’s needs as essential qualities of effective leadership.

Despite previously maintaining that he does not operate a personal Facebook page for criticism, George clarified, “I have never had a Facebook page before and I do not have one now. My offices, both in the Capitol Building at the time and at my private residence, serve as my platforms. Anyone claiming to be me online is an imposter.”

Additionally, George urged government agencies, particularly security forces, to respond swiftly to emergencies, emphasizing the need for a prompt response to potential crises.

In contrast, he condemned the former administration of President George Weah, describing it as dictatorial.

He cited various governance failures and restrictions on civil rights that defined Weah’s presidency, asserting that such leadership inhibited progress and compromised democratic values.

George’s comments reflect a broader sentiment among various national stakeholders and citizens who are optimistic about the potential for transformative change under the current administration.

Moreover, the former lawmaker, who was previously associated with the Congress for Democratic Change, announced his resignation from the party in February 2025, stating this decision which allowed him to uncover more concerning issues from the past administration that he believes require urgent attention and development.

However, as Liberia grapples with its challenges, his approval rating voiced for President Boakai signals a desire for collaborative governance that fosters unity and accountability while there seems to be a growing emphasis on leadership that prioritizes the public good over personal or political interests, which raises hopes for positive developments not only in Montserrado County but throughout the country.

A staunch supporter of Weah, former Representative Acarous Gray

Former Rep. Gray Comes in Weah Defense and Queries Sen. Joseph

Senator Saah Joseph’s revelation and accusations against former President George Weah and the CDC did not go unanswer as former Montserrado County Electoral District #8 Representative, Moses Acarous Gray, though appearing visibly shaken by Sen. Joseph’s revelation responded that the CDC has had great stalwarts and leaders come and go but the party still remains strong. At one point, Gray pulled out his phone to make a call but was taken off the live stream before it went through.

Gray said despite the accusations against Weah and the CDC, the party will remain focused and Liberians should not be surprised if these prodigal sons who are leaving will come begging in 2029 to rejoin the party as the CDC will definitely return power.

Weah’s Protégé Keff Hassan Blasts Senator Saah Joseph for “Betraying CDC”

A staunch protégé of ex-President George Weah has said that the political future of Senator Saah Joseph is over, in his reaction to the Montserrado County’s accusation against Weah and the CDC. “Saah Joseph, your political career is over. Trust me, you are done,” Hassan asserted.

In a separate post on his Facebook page, Hassan called on Liberians to condemn Senator Joseph for betraying Weah and the CDC. “Only a betrayer and an evil person will support others who betray people. Every Liberian should condemn Saah Joseph for betraying President Weah, who took Saah Joseph from a refugee camp in Sierra Leone and made him a senator,” Keff Hassan said.

Weah’s Other Ordinary Supporters Take on Sen. Joseph

As Senator Saah Joseph’s revelation went viral on social media and in other media outlets and platforms, ordinary supporters, followers and sympathizers of former President George Weah debunked the Senator, calling him a betrayer.

“Why you didn’t speak out about this all long or because you are coming to run for president in 2029 and you want to lie on former president Weah? After all, your stole the Liberian people money and you want to make it look like you are a good person now right,” one CDC posted in the comment section of the Saah Joseph revelation that was trending on social media.

Another CDCians posted: “The question is!! did you believe in Senator Saah H. Joseph? and can you take him serious again? We’re not stupid here again let me tell you soon oh baba. Criminal will always find excuses.”

New Kaymah Town community Co-Chairman Kesselee Urges Departing Politicians to Exit Respectfully

Additionally, Peter Kesselee, co-Chairman of new Kaymah Town community in Paynesville City, Montserrado County is calling on politicians leaving their parties to do so with respect, warning against publicly badmouthing the institutions that once supported them.

His remarks follow recent revelations by Montserrado County Senator Saah H. Joseph, a former executive of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), who openly criticized his former party during a live appearance on Spoon TV.

In an interview with the media, Mr. Kesselee expressed concern over the tone of political discourse in Liberia, particularly when former allies turn against each other.

“If you are no longer interested in being a part of any political institution in Liberia, the best course of action is to move on without badmouthing the very party that supported you when you were starting in politics,” he noted.

Quoting political commentator Henry P. Costa, Pastor Kesselee added, “Man can’t talk all,” stressing that not every issue needs to be publicly addressed. “I believe he was correct. Indeed, a person cannot address every issue in any given situation,” he intoned.

Kesselee, who serves as co-chairman of the New Kaymah Town community, argues that leaving a political party should not be a platform for public attacks. “If you continue to criticize the party you no longer wish to be associated with, will your next political party take you seriously?” he asked a rhetorical question.

He also cautioned politicians against being manipulated during media appearances. “Never allow any journalist to manipulate your words or pressure you into saying things you don’t genuinely believe. Journalists are trained to provoke responses, so it’s essential for those of us appearing on their platforms to be prepared for their tactics,” he warned.

Mr.  Kesselee expressed disappointment in Senator Joseph’s recent comments on Spoon TV, where the lawmaker made critical remarks about former President George Weah.

“I still believe Senator Saah H. Joseph made a mistake by criticizing former President George M. Weah during that discussion on Spoon Talk. He should consider apologizing to the former president,” Kesselee said.

He further warned that such behavior could set a precedent for future political transitions. “If Liberians do not discourage their leaders from badmouthing the parties that supported them, we may see a repeat of this behavior after President Joseph N. Boakai leaves office,” he cautioned.

“People may emerge just as Senator Saah H. Joseph did, speaking negatively about the man who once allowed him to run for office as a representative candidate for the CDC in District 13, Montserrado County,” he added.

Mr. Kesselee concluded by urging Senator Joseph to offer a public apology to former President Weah, emphasizing that respect and gratitude should guide all political exits.

Political Pundits and Public Reaction to Sen. Joseph’ Revelation

Meanwhile, political pundits and public reaction to the Montserrado County Senator’s revelation and allegations against former President George Weah and his CDC cronies were mixed. Some welcome the Senator’s revelation, while others thought he should have gone public against a man and party that gave him the opportunity to become a Senator and political figure that he is now at the moment in Liberia.

But political pundits say what Senator Saah Joseph did comes with the political territory in a democracy that is based on multi-party ideology. According to these pundits, Senator Joseph’s revelation will serve as a guide for future electorates to scrutinize and vet people they will want to vote into public office to serve the state. To these pundits, Senator Joseph is a patriot in this regard by coming out boldly to point the shady deals and scams that the former CDC government under the watch of former President Weah carried out to the detriment of Liberians and the country.

On the other hand, some pundits argue that while former President Weah and his cronies were allegedly indulged in scams to exhort monies from investors, Senator Joseph and the rest of the Legislature did not put ordinary Liberians first in the allotment of national budget for the good of the people. They accused these lawmakers of allotting unto themselves millions of dollars in salaries, benefits, public hearing fees, transportation, vehicles among others while civil servants make a bare minimum wage of not more than US$150. Even some civil servants still take home US$53 monthly as salary, but Senator Joseph is only critiquing his former boss and not taking into consideration the current situation affecting civil servants and Liberians in general.

These pundits argue that the mushrooming of political parties is a constitutional right, but Liberians must be circumspect in who they elect to public office judging from past and current realities how those elected to public office maltreat the ordinary citizens after ascending to state power. Well, Senator Saah Joseph’s revelation despite the mixed reactions has sent a message that every Liberian must think about for the good of the country and not for individual political elevation.  The bookmakers are watching keenly.
