Former President George Weah

MONROVIA – Former Liberian President George Weah received a rapturous welcome on Monday, September 22nd, as he returned from a trip to Europe, with thousands of Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) supporters flooding the Roberts International Airport (RIA) corridor to greet their political leader.

The massive crowd, described by CDC officials as “enormous and electrifying,” broke into songs, chants, and dances as they escorted Weah’s convoy. Senior CDC executives, including party chairman Janga Kowo, were on hand to rally supporters.

But the festivities quickly turned tense. According to Chairman Kowo, several CDC partisans were arrested by police during the wait for Weah’s arrival — a move he condemned as an “act of provocation.” He warned that such actions could carry “serious political repercussions,” accusing state security of deliberately targeting CDC supporters.

The incident follows Monday’s tense standoff at RIA, where Weah’s arrival sparked clashes between CDC partisans and law enforcement officers, leading to traffic disruptions and heightened security deployments along the airport highway.

Addressing the jubilant crowd, Weah downplayed the controversies surrounding his trip abroad. “The only reason I went to Europe was to make sure that my son Timothy finds a club,” he explained. “Then he went to Olympique Marseilles with me, and now I’m back home to do my work.”

The former president used the occasion to announce plans for a “state-of-the-art CDC headquarters,” which he said would symbolize the party’s strength and future ambitions.

Despite the tensions, Weah urged calm among his followers, stressing the importance of maintaining stability. “We must preserve peace in our country,” he told supporters, calling for discipline and unity as the CDC positions itself for the political battles ahead.

“Why should we fight? I have always called for peace. Peace is what we need. To all CDCians, George Weah is back; we will get our party headquarters back,” the former President said.

Meanwhile, police authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the alleged arrests of CDC members.
