MONROVIA – The World Bank has called on the newly inducted leadership of the Publishers Association of Liberia (PAL) to uphold core values, empower young media professionals, and play a central role in promoting transparency and accountability in the country.
Delivering the keynote address at the induction ceremony of PAL’s new leadership, held in Monrovia over the weekend, World Bank Liberia Country Manager, Georgia Wallen, described the occasion as not just a celebration of leadership transition but a moment to reflect on the critical role publishers and the broader media sector play in Liberia’s development.
“It is an honor to represent the World Bank today as you induct the new leaders of the Publishers Association of Liberia,” Wallen said. “This is a unique occasion that highlights the pivotal role that publishers and the media play in shaping Liberia’s narrative, sustaining peace, and driving national development.”
Wallen challenged the new PAL leadership to anchor their work in the Association’s founding values — excellence, dedication, integrity, and community — emphasizing that these principles are critical in navigating the evolving media landscape shaped by digital transformation and public expectations.
“You are at the forefront of adapting to changing narratives in both traditional and digital spaces. Your values will serve you well as you promote collaboration, creativity, innovation, and professionalism in the years ahead,” she said.
Call to Invest in Young Media Professionals

Noting that over 75% of Liberia’s population is under the age of 35, Wallen urged the association to prioritize the mentorship and development of young journalists, editors, photographers, and videographers.
“This is one of Liberia’s greatest strengths,” she said. “By investing in the next generation of media professionals, you will help cultivate a culture of excellence and integrity that will define the future of journalism and publishing in Liberia.”
She called on the new PAL leadership to create opportunities for younger voices to rise within the industry, noting that Liberia’s democratic and developmental journey depends on a vibrant, informed, and responsible press corps.
Media’s Role in Accountability and Peace
Wallen also stressed the indispensable role of publishers and journalists in promoting transparency, public accountability, and informed citizen engagement — values that are essential for sustaining Liberia’s peace and ensuring inclusive development.
“Publishers are integral to society, and your audiences rely on you for accurate and timely information,” she said. “We are all accountable — and journalists and publishers are no exception.”

She tied this call to the World Bank’s broader development goals in Liberia, referencing the upcoming launch of a new Country Partnership Framework (CPF), which will focus on creating jobs, improving governance, and building stronger institutions.
“Development is everybody’s business. That’s why the World Bank emphasizes access to information, transparency, and citizen engagement,” she explained. “When citizens are informed and actively engaged, development works better.”
Looking Ahead
Wallen concluded by congratulating the newly inducted PAL leadership and commending outgoing officials and partners who made the induction possible.
“We look forward to a bright future for PAL and the broader publishing industry in Liberia. Thank you for giving the World Bank the honor of participating in this important event,” she said.
The induction ceremony brought together key stakeholders, including Vice President Jeremiah K. Koung, who was represented at the occasion, Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah, representatives of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), development partners, civil society leaders, and members of the media fraternity.
