Messengers of Peace Academic Excellence awards

KPOR TOWN, Margibi County – Four outstanding students of Kpor Town Public School have been recognized for their exceptional academic performance with the Ambassador Bankole Adeoye Academic Excellence Awards, an initiative aimed at promoting educational achievement and inspiring the next generation of Liberian leaders.

The awards were presented during a ceremony held on Friday, June 26, through a personal donation from Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, African Union (AU) Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS). The initiative was facilitated by Messengers of Peace-Liberia Inc. (MOP-Liberia) under the leadership of Gwendolyn S. Myers, a Global Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) Pioneer and member of the African Union Advisory Panel on Democratic Elections and Governance.

The award recipients represented both the Junior High and Elementary divisions of Kpor Town Public School and were selected following a comprehensive academic assessment conducted jointly by the school administration, subject teachers, and MOP-Liberia.

The honorees are:

  • Agnes Larty – 8th Grade (Civics: 93%; General Science: 90%)
  • Rena Blamo – 5th Grade (General Science: 86%)
  • Harris Karyeah – 6th Grade (General Science: 95%)
  • Biatrice Sieh – 6th Grade (Health Science: 88%)

Delivering opening remarks, MOP-Liberia Founder and Executive Director Gwendolyn S. Myers said the awards recognize the highest-performing students in Civics, Social Studies, General Science, and Health Science, while encouraging a culture of academic excellence among young Liberians.

She noted that the initiative builds on the organization’s broader mission of promoting youth empowerment, peacebuilding, and meaningful participation in national development.

The awards ceremony comes just months after the official commissioning of the fully renovated Kpor Town Public School—the first Right to Development Quick Impact Project implemented by the African Union in Liberia in December 2025 under the AU’s Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (PCRD) Policy, in partnership with MOP-Liberia.

Speaking during the ceremony, School Principal Melvin Lackay expressed heartfelt appreciation to Ambassador Adeoye for his generous personal contribution and commended MOP-Liberia for coordinating the initiative.

“The support will significantly ease the financial burden on the families of these deserving students while motivating them to continue striving for academic excellence,” Lackay said.

Parents of the award recipients also welcomed the initiative, describing the recognition as both timely and inspiring. They said the awards would encourage their children to remain committed to their studies and pursue their educational goals with renewed determination.

In a message conveyed through the organizers, Ambassador Adeoye said the awards are intended to inspire academic excellence among young people while encouraging them to contribute meaningfully to Africa’s governance, peacebuilding, and sustainable development agenda.

He emphasized that investing in education remains essential to achieving the aspirations of Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want—the African Union’s long-term blueprint for building an integrated, peaceful, prosperous, and people-driven continent.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of certificates and awards to the four students, accompanied by words of encouragement from organizers, educators, and community members, who urged the recipients to remain focused on academic excellence and to serve as role models for other young people in their communities.
