As President Mamady Doumbouya sent his soldiers out to bully his neigbhbors – Liberia and Sierra Leone – he handed the commander the flag

MONROVIA — The government of Guinea has deployed additional troops to its border regions following recent tensions with neighboring Liberia, a development that has heightened regional concerns and intensified diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

According to eyewitnesses, the final contingent of Guinean soldiers departed Conakry on Sunday, March 15, 2026, joining earlier units already stationed along the frontier.

The troops, drawn from multiple branches of the Guinean armed forces, were deployed as part of what the government described as a patriotic effort to protect the country’s territorial integrity.

“These soldiers from all branches united in a patriotic commitment are leaving to defend our land, our people, and our values,” an eyewitness in a video said, adding that the troops are prepared to confront any challenges that may arise.

Doumbouya Leads Send-Off Ceremony

Guinea’s President and commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Mamady Doumbouya, personally presided over the departure ceremony, where he symbolically handed the national flag to the soldiers.

Addressing the troops, Doumbouya emphasized their responsibility to defend Guinea’s sovereignty.

“You soldiers of Guinea are the symbol of our unity, our strength, and our resilience,” he is quoted as saying. “At a time when our homeland faces challenges, your commitment and dedication are more precious than ever.”

The Guinean leader also pledged that the country would not allow any portion of its territory to be taken.

“I give the people of Guinea confidence that no portion of the land left by our ancestors will be conquered by anyone,” Doumbouya declared.

Background to the Border Tensions

Flashback: A few days ago when Guinean soldiers crossed into Liberia, took down the Liberian flag and hoisted theirs on Liberian soil

The troop deployment comes amid heightened tensions along the Liberia–Guinea border, particularly around communities in Lofa County, where reports of Guinean soldiers operating near or across Liberian territory have sparked concern among residents.

Liberian authorities have since increased security presence in the region while pursuing diplomatic engagement to prevent escalation.

The situation has also drawn attention from regional organizations such as the Economic Community of West African States and the Mano River Union, both of which have historically played mediation roles in cross-border disputes in the Mano River region.

Flashback: On that day, when the Guinean army crossed over and hoisted their country’s flag on Liberian soil, brave young Liberian men stood in their faces, reclaimed their land and planted the tri-colored Liberian flag and sang the national anthem

Border communities in Lofa County recently mobilized alongside Liberian security forces to monitor activities near the frontier following reports of the presence of Guinean troops.

Warning from Former Warlord Turned Evangelist

The rising tensions have also sparked reactions from several public figures in Liberia, including Joshua Milton Blahyi, popularly known as “General Butt Naked.”

Blahyi, a controversial figure from Liberia’s civil war who later became a Christian evangelist, recently warned that the situation could escalate into armed conflict if not handled carefully.

During Liberia’s civil war in the early 1990s, Blahyi commanded a militia faction notorious for ritual practices and extreme violence before later renouncing his past and converting to Christianity. He has since become a preacher advocating reconciliation and national development.

Blahyi told followers in a recent broadcast that Liberia must take the current tensions seriously and prepare itself while continuing diplomatic efforts to avoid war.

Guinea’s Military Position

Guinea’s government maintains that its military deployments are defensive in nature and aimed at safeguarding the country’s borders rather than initiating conflict.

Calm has now returned to the Sorlumba border post in Foya between Liberia and Guinea

Officials said the Guinean armed forces have been trained and equipped to respond to contemporary security challenges while protecting the country’s population.

“Guinea has never had the vocation of a conquering army,” the narrator in the video noted, emphasizing that its armed forces are focused on defending territorial integrity and supporting regional stability.

Calls for Calm

As tensions persist, both Liberian and Guinean authorities have been urged by regional partners to pursue dialogue and avoid actions that could escalate the situation.

Diplomatic observers say maintaining open communication between the two governments will be critical to preventing misunderstandings along the sensitive frontier.

For now, security forces on both sides of the border remain on heightened alert while diplomatic channels continue working toward a peaceful resolution.
