Rev. Canon Michael Tuan Sie as Suffragan Bishop

BOLAHUN, Lofa County — The Episcopal Church of Liberia has elected Rev. Canon Michael Tuan Sie as Suffragan Bishop, marking a significant development in the church’s efforts to expand leadership and strengthen its presence across the country.

Canon Sie was elected on March 13, 2026, during the Church’s 90th Annual Convention held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, a gathering that brought together clergy and lay delegates from across Liberia.

Strengthening Regional Leadership

His election forms part of a broader restructuring initiative within the Episcopal Church of Liberia aimed at decentralizing ecclesiastical authority and improving pastoral oversight.

Canon Sie is among two Suffragan Bishops elected to serve newly established diocesan jurisdictions, with his assignment focused on the South Eastern Region of Liberia.

Church officials say the move is intended to enhance responsiveness to local congregations and ensure more effective administration of church affairs in underserved regions.

However, his election remains subject to formal confirmation by the House of Bishops of the Anglican Church of the Province of West Africa, in keeping with Anglican tradition and canon law.

Another Bishop Elected

Also elected during the convention was Rev. Canon Wilmot Merchant, who will serve alongside Canon Sie as part of the Church’s expanded episcopal leadership.

A Journey Rooted in Service

Canon Sie hails from Jekwekpo, Sasstown, in Grand Kru County, and brings to the role a blend of pastoral experience, academic training, and grassroots engagement.

Prior to his election, he served as Rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, where he earned a reputation as a dynamic and community-focused leader.

He studied management at the University of Liberia and also attended Cuttington University in Suakoko, Bong County.

Supporters describe him as a charismatic and innovative cleric, particularly popular among urban congregations for his forward-looking approach to ministry.

A Long-Awaited Milestone

Canon Sie’s elevation to the episcopacy follows years of service within the Church and comes after he emerged as a leading contender in the 2022 election for Bishop Coadjutor.

His election in 2026 is widely seen within church circles as both a personal milestone and a strategic step toward achieving long-standing institutional goals.

Church Looks Ahead

The creation of additional diocesan leadership structures reflects the Episcopal Church of Liberia’s commitment to growth, inclusivity, and improved governance.

Observers say the election of Canon Sie and his colleague signals a new chapter in the Church’s evolution—one that prioritizes regional empowerment, accessibility, and stronger pastoral care.

As the Church awaits formal confirmation from the regional House of Bishops, anticipation remains high among congregants, particularly in southeastern Liberia, where Canon Sie is expected to play a pivotal role.
