St. Teresa Convent Catholic School

MONROVIA — The Ministry of Education Liberia has provided an update on enforcement actions taken against St. Teresa Convent Catholic School, confirming that the institution has begun complying with sanctions imposed over a serious breach of student safeguarding and supervision standards.

The measures were initially announced on February 25, 2026, after the Ministry cited the school for failing to uphold required safety protocols involving students.

School Takes Steps Toward Compliance

According to the Ministry, the school has made measurable progress in meeting the directives issued by authorities.

Among the key actions confirmed:

  • Public Apology Issued:
The school submitted a formal apology to the Ministry and published it in national newspapers, including the Daily Observer, acknowledging the incident and accepting responsibility for lapses in student supervision.
  • Fine Paid in Full:
A financial penalty of L$500,000 has been paid into the Government of Liberia’s Consolidated Account, in line with the Ministry’s directive.
  • Disciplinary Actions Implemented:
The institution reported internal disciplinary measures, including the suspension of senior staff such as the registrar, dean of students, principal, and vice principal, all linked to supervisory responsibilities at the time of the incident.

The school also indicated that it has introduced stricter internal controls, including tighter supervision protocols and restrictions on certain student activities.

Verification Still Ongoing

Despite these steps, the Ministry emphasized that it is still assessing the effectiveness and sustainability of the corrective measures.

Officials say the verification process will determine whether the school has fully addressed the underlying issues and implemented safeguards to prevent future violations.

“Safety Is Non-Negotiable”

Reaffirming its position, the Ministry stressed that student protection remains a top priority and that all institutions must adhere strictly to established standards.

“Student safety, proper supervision, and adherence to established standards are non-negotiable obligations,” the Ministry said.

It warned that any institution found in violation of these standards will face enforcement measures in accordance with the law, with compliance subject to continuous monitoring.

Broader Implications

The case has drawn public attention to issues of student welfare and institutional accountability within Liberia’s education system.

Education authorities say the action serves as a reminder that schools—whether public or private—must maintain strict oversight of student activities and ensure a safe learning environment at all times.

As the Ministry continues its review, further decisions may depend on the outcome of its verification process and the school’s long-term compliance.
