MONROVIA – The Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) has announced a major breakthrough from its participation in Posidonia 2026, one of the world’s largest and most influential maritime exhibitions, with more than 150 vessels expected to be added to Liberia’s ship registry as a result of high-level engagements held during the event.

According to a statement issued in Monrovia, LiMA Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr., has been leading a series of strategic meetings in Athens, Greece, with shipowners, vessel managers, maritime investors, classification societies, and key stakeholders from across the global shipping industry.

The Authority described the engagements as highly productive, noting that they have yielded significant benefits for Liberia’s maritime sector while reinforcing the country’s position as one of the world’s leading maritime registries.

As a direct outcome of discussions held during the exhibition, approximately 150 new vessels are expected to join the Liberian Registry, marking a substantial expansion of Liberia’s flagship maritime program and underscoring growing international confidence in the country’s maritime administration.

The anticipated increase in vessel registrations is expected to further strengthen Liberia’s standing among the world’s top maritime nations while generating additional revenue to support national development initiatives.

Beyond fleet expansion, the Maritime Authority revealed that several international shipowners and operators have expressed a heightened interest in employing Liberian seafarers aboard their vessels.

Officials say the development could create new employment opportunities for qualified Liberian maritime professionals and contribute to the government’s broader objectives of job creation, skills development, and human capital advancement.

Speaking from Athens, Commissioner Lighe emphasized that Liberia’s active participation in Posidonia 2026 reflects the country’s commitment to maintaining high standards in maritime governance and expanding partnerships within the global shipping community.

“Our engagements at Posidonia 2026 have been highly productive and affirm Liberia’s reputation as a trusted and preferred maritime flag state,” Cllr. Lighe said. “The interest shown by international shipowners in registering additional vessels under the Liberian flag and employing more Liberian seafarers reflects the confidence that the global maritime community continues to place in Liberia.”

He noted that the expected addition of more than 150 vessels to the registry represents a significant vote of confidence in Liberia’s maritime administration and its ability to provide reliable, efficient, and internationally recognized services to shipowners worldwide.

Liberia currently operates one of the largest ship registries in the world and has long maintained a strong presence in the international maritime sector. The country’s open registry continues to attract vessel owners because of its regulatory framework, global reach, and commitment to international maritime standards.

Posidonia 2026, being held from June 1 to June 5 at the Athens Metropolitan Expo, is regarded as the premier global gathering for the maritime industry. The biennial event brings together shipowners, fleet managers, technical experts, investors, policymakers, and maritime service providers from around the world.

The exhibition serves as a critical platform for business development, innovation, and policy discussions, providing participants with direct access to the Greek shipping community, which controls the world’s largest merchant fleet and a significant share of global maritime tonnage.

This year’s event features more than 60 conferences, seminars, and industry forums focusing on some of the sector’s most pressing issues, including decarbonization, digital transformation, maritime security, regulatory compliance, risk management, and operational efficiency.

Industry leaders are also using the platform to explore emerging opportunities and address challenges associated with the global energy transition and evolving geopolitical developments affecting international shipping.

In addition to its business and policy agenda, Posidonia 2026 includes several networking and sporting activities, including the Posidonia Cup sailing race, the Posidonia Running Event, a golf tournament, the Shipsoccer Tournament, and a 3×3 basketball competition.

For Liberia, the gains recorded at Posidonia 2026 are being viewed as another important step in strengthening the country’s influence within the global maritime industry while creating new opportunities for economic growth, employment, and international investment.
