BUCHANAN, Grand Bassa County – A major consignment of electricity meters has arrived in Buchanan, marking another significant milestone in the implementation of a €42 million European Union-funded energy project aimed at expanding access to reliable electricity across parts of Liberia.
The shipment, consisting of both single-phase and three-phase split electricity meters, was offloaded on Friday at the Buchanan Warehouse under the supervision of MBH Power Nigeria Limited, the company overseeing logistics and warehouse management for the Buchanan component of the project.
The meters are expected to play a critical role in expanding electricity distribution services and facilitating new customer connections in Buchanan and surrounding communities.
Boosting Electricity Access
The delivery forms part of the European Union’s broader investment program to strengthen energy infrastructure and improve electricity access in the cities of Buchanan, Greenville, and Barclayville.
The €42 million initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Government of Liberia and is designed to expand power distribution networks, improve energy reliability, and support socioeconomic development in underserved regions of the country.
Officials say the newly arrived meters will be installed in homes, businesses, and public institutions as part of efforts to increase the number of electricity consumers connected to the national grid.
The project is expected to improve access to affordable and sustainable energy services while supporting economic activities and improving the delivery of essential public services.
Progress Toward Electrification Targets
Energy sector officials described the successful arrival and storage of the meters as another important step toward achieving the project’s electrification goals.
The initiative seeks to accelerate the expansion of electricity infrastructure in southeastern and central Liberia, where access to reliable power has historically remained limited.
According to project implementers, the meter installation phase will pave the way for a significant increase in customer connections and help strengthen the operational efficiency of local electricity networks.
EU Reaffirms Support for Liberia’s Energy Sector
The European Union has repeatedly emphasized that improving electricity access remains central to Liberia’s development agenda and a key pillar of its partnership with the Liberian Government.
An EU representative noted that expanded access to electricity has the potential to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, improve healthcare and educational services, and enhance the overall quality of life for citizens.
“The European Union remains committed to supporting the Government and people of Liberia in advancing the country’s energy sector,” the representative said. “Increased access to electricity will foster economic growth, improve public services, and create opportunities for sustainable development.”
Supporting National Development
The arrival of the meters comes as Liberia continues efforts to increase national electrification rates and expand access to modern energy services across the country.
Successive governments have identified reliable electricity as one of the country’s most critical development challenges, with inadequate power supply often cited as a major obstacle to business growth, industrial expansion, and job creation.
The EU-funded project is expected to complement ongoing efforts by the Government of Liberia and the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) to improve energy access and strengthen the country’s power infrastructure.
With the meters now safely stored in Buchanan, preparations are underway for the next phase of customer connections, bringing the city one step closer to broader and more reliable electricity coverage.
