By James M. Kanneh, Political Commentator

The recent seizure of an estimated US$19.2 million worth of narcotics by the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) marks a significant step in the fight against illegal drugs and efforts to rid our country of harmful substances that continue to threaten the future of our young people.

This development is both alarming and troubling. The discovery of such a large quantity of drugs at the Robert International Airport days ago should be thoroughly investigated, and all those responsible—whether importers, exporters, financiers, or facilitators—must be identified, arrested, and prosecuted regardless of their status or political affiliation.

Whenever sensitive investigations are ongoing, we should refrain from politicizing them because of our political differences. The discussions taking place on social media among Liberians both at home and in the diaspora are concerning. More troubling is the fact that some political actors have gone as far as accusing current government officials without presenting any evidence.

Such speculation can be dangerous. We should allow state security institutions, through their collective efforts and professional investigations, to determine the facts and identify those involved.

Public sentiments and unverified allegations have the potential to create confusion and undermine confidence in the investigative process. Therefore, we should exercise restraint and allow the investigation to run its course before drawing conclusions.

Regardless of who occupies public office, our common denominator is Mama Liberia. Our nation must be protected from drugs and other harmful substances that are destroying the fabric of our youthful generation. The LDEA deserves commendation for its ongoing efforts, and we should avoid spreading rumors or making accusations against individuals without credible evidence.

During the six years of the former CDC-led administration, many Liberians criticized the government’s handling of drug-related issues. Those criticisms were justified where shortcomings existed. Likewise, no one in the current administration—including myself—should defend wrongdoing simply because of political loyalty. What was wrong yesterday remains wrong today. If credible investigations reveal the involvement of any individual or group in this drug cartel, they should be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Since the current administration assumed office approximately two years and five months ago, there have been notable efforts to address drug-related challenges within our territorial boundaries. While much work remains to be done, the fight against illicit drugs must continue with seriousness and determination.

Mr. James M. Kanneh

We must also remember that a century from now, this generation will be gone. The legacy we leave for future generations should be one of responsibility, accountability, and a commitment to building a drug-free Liberia.

Unfortunately, some opposition figures and political commentators have already suggested that members of the current administration are linked to this drug shipment without presenting any facts. While every citizen has the right to criticize the government, criticism should be based on evidence rather than speculation. Without facts, such allegations amount to little more than attempts to attract public attention.

If the accusations currently circulating on social media cannot be substantiated, they will ultimately collapse under the weight of facts once the LDEA concludes its investigation and presents its findings.

At the same time, anyone found culpable through a credible and transparent investigation should not expect protection from the government. President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has built a reputation over many years in public service as a man of integrity, and the law should apply equally to all.

Should the LDEA publicly name individuals without conducting a thorough investigation simply because accusations were made in previous administrations? Certainly not. Such an approach would be irresponsible and contrary to the principles of justice and due process.

The best path forward is patience. Allowing investigators to determine the true nature and ownership of this drug consignment will produce a more credible, transparent, and uncontestable outcome.

As Liberians, we must remain united in our desire to see justice prevail. Let us support the investigation, reject speculation, and allow the facts to speak for themselves.

Patience first.
