Alphonso Davies celebrating one of his goals

Canadian Football Star and Liberian-born Refugee Says Opportunity Transformed His Life as He Joins UNHCR Campaign Ahead of FIFA World Cup

MONROVIA – The remarkable journey of Canadian football captain Alphonso Davies from a refugee camp in Ghana to the pinnacle of world football is once again drawing global attention, with the Liberian-born star using his platform to advocate for refugees and displaced people around the world.

Davies, one of the world’s most recognizable footballers and captain of Canada’s national team, recently shared his personal story as part of a campaign launched by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) highlighting the experiences of footballers whose lives have been shaped by war, displacement, and migration.

In an emotional message, Davies reflected on how his family’s escape from Liberia’s civil conflict ultimately paved the way for his success on the global stage.

“My story didn’t start on the football pitch. It started in a refugee camp in Ghana,” Davies said. “My parents fled the war in Liberia and ended up in a refugee camp in Ghana.”

Born in the Buduburam Refugee Settlement in Ghana in 2000, Davies is the son of Liberian parents who fled the country’s devastating civil war in search of safety. Like thousands of other Liberian families displaced by conflict, his parents sought refuge outside the country amid years of violence and uncertainty.

In 2005, the family was resettled in Canada through a refugee resettlement program supported by UNHCR, a move that would profoundly alter the course of his life.

“I didn’t live the conflict myself, but my parents did, not knowing what would happen next,” Davies recalled. “When we were resettled to Canada with the support from the UNHCR, everything changed. We found safety, we had a future.” Today, Davies stands among football’s elite.

After emerging as a teenage sensation with Major League Soccer side Vancouver Whitecaps, he secured a high-profile transfer to German powerhouse Bayern Munich, where he has won multiple Bundesliga titles, domestic cups, and the UEFA Champions League.

He later became captain of Canada’s national team and one of the key figures behind the country’s resurgence on the international football stage, including its participation in the FIFA World Cup.

Yet despite his global success, Davies says he has never forgotten his roots or the sacrifices his parents made to create a better future for their family.

“My parents worked so hard, multiple jobs at once, and because of that, I got the chance to go to school, to play football, and to dream,” he said. “Football is more than just a game to me. It gave me everything – a place to belong, to make friends, and a way forward.”

Davies’ remarks came as part of UNHCR’s “Gamechanging Team” initiative, which shines a spotlight on footballers from refugee and displacement backgrounds who have gone on to achieve international success despite immense challenges.

As a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, Davies has consistently used his influence to advocate for refugees worldwide and to raise awareness about the struggles faced by millions of displaced people.

Speaking about his rise from refugee origins to international stardom, he emphasized that his journey demonstrates what can happen when refugees are given opportunities to rebuild their lives.

“Every time I step on the pitch, I play for my family and for those refugees needing safety,” Davies said. “When you give refugees an opportunity, they don’t just survive, they can thrive. I’m living proof of that.”

His story resonates deeply in Liberia, where memories of the country’s civil wars remain vivid and where thousands of families were forced to seek refuge across West Africa during years of conflict.

For many Liberians, Davies represents more than football excellence. He embodies resilience, determination, and hope—a living example of how adversity can be transformed into achievement through opportunity and perseverance.

His journey from a refugee camp to becoming one of the world’s most celebrated footballers also highlights the broader contribution refugees can make when given access to education, protection, and opportunity.

As global displacement continues to reach record levels, Davies’ message serves as a powerful reminder that behind every refugee statistic is a human story filled with potential.

“From playing in Edmonton, to Bayern Munich, to representing Canada and captaining my country,” Davies reflected, “that feeling of pride is something I can’t describe.”

His story continues to inspire millions around the world and serves as a powerful testament to the resilience of refugees and the transformative power of opportunity, education, and sport.

For Liberia, the success of Alphonso Davies remains a source of pride—a reminder that even from the hardships of displacement can emerge extraordinary stories of hope, perseverance, and global achievement.
