MONROVIA – The opposition political party, Citizens Movement for Change (CMC), has categorically condemned the May 24, 2025, statement issued by the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT), purportedly in response to comments allegedly made by Bomi County Senator and ECOWAS Parliamentarian, Edwin Snowe.
This reckless communication from MICAT is not only laced with falsehoods and misrepresentations — it is a direct assault on free speech, political pluralism, and democratic values in Liberia. It sets a dangerous precedent where political disagreements are framed as threats to national security, and dissenting voices are treated as enemies of the state.
To publicly accuse a sitting Senator of plotting to undermine the state without a shred of verified evidence is both irresponsible and vindictive. More troubling is the government’s call for ECOWAS and international partners to act against a Liberian citizen on the basis of unsubstantiated claims. This is not just poor governance — it is state-sponsored intimidation, and it must not be normalized.
CMC reminds the Boakai-led administration: “Political dissent is not sedition. The right to speak, criticize, and challenge those in power is sacred in a democracy. ECOWAS is not an extension of the ruling party’s propaganda machinery. Governance is not about silencing critics — it is about serving the people.”
CMC also called on ECOWAS and other international partners to see the government’s statement for what it is — “a desperate attempt to scapegoat and deflect from the government’s own failures.” The opposition party also called on the Liberian people to remain vigilant and reject “this creeping culture of fear, distortion, and authoritarianism.”
CMC wants the Ministry of Information to immediately retract its statement and apologize to the Liberian people for this reckless abuse of power.
“We in the CMC believe that no amount of propaganda can erase the truth, and no threats can silence the demand for justice, good governance, and accountable leadership.
“We remain firm in our commitment to democracy, civil liberties, and the rule of law. And we will continue to stand as a voice of reason, truth, and hope for a better Liberia.”
