The Liberian lady, Madam Janjay Roland, who died in the tragic fire incident in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi, India

-What Began as a Trip for Healing Ended in Unimaginable Loss as a Devoted Wife Dies While Supporting Her Husband Through Medical Treatment Abroad

MONROVIA, Liberia – What was meant to be a journey of hope, healing, and recovery for a Liberian family has instead become a story of profound sorrow after Madam Janjay Musu Nyuan Roland lost her life in a devastating hotel fire in New Delhi, India.

The tragedy, which has touched hearts in both Liberia and India, occurred on June 3, 2026, when a massive blaze swept through the Flourish Stay Hotel in the Malviya Nagar area of India’s capital, claiming at least 21 lives and injuring dozens of others, including foreign nationals who had traveled to the country seeking medical treatment.

Among the victims was Madam Roland, who had accompanied her husband, former Maryland County Representative Hon. Isaac Blalu Roland, to India for specialized medical care.

Her death has sparked an outpouring of grief from family members, government officials, friends, and ordinary Liberians, many of whom have expressed sympathy for a woman remembered as a devoted wife, mother, relative, and friend.

A Journey of Love Ends in Tragedy

Family members say Madam Roland’s sole purpose for traveling to India was to stand by her husband during a difficult period in his life as he underwent medical treatment.

Like many Liberians who seek advanced medical services abroad, the Rolands had embarked on the trip with optimism and faith that treatment would bring healing and renewed strength.

Instead, tragedy struck without warning.

The devastating fire transformed a place that should have offered comfort and temporary refuge into the scene of one of the deadliest incidents involving Liberian citizens abroad in recent years.

According to reports from India, the fire erupted during the morning hours and rapidly engulfed portions of the multi-story building, trapping occupants as thick smoke spread through the structure.

Many of those staying at the hotel were reportedly patients and family members receiving treatment at nearby medical facilities.

Liberia Confirms Death, Three Others Injured

The Government of Liberia officially confirmed Madam Roland’s death through information provided by India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

Speaking at a regular press briefing in Monrovia, Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah expressed profound sadness over the tragedy.

“We have learned through the Indian Ministry of External Affairs of the tragic death of a Liberian citizen, Janjay Roland, who died in a fire incident in Malviya Nagar, Delhi,” Minister Piah announced.

The minister disclosed that three other Liberians sustained injuries during the fire and are currently receiving medical treatment at Max Hospital in Saket, New Delhi.

They include former Representative Isaac Blalu Roland, Leah Tally, and James T.Z. Tarley.

The Liberian Government said it remains in contact with authorities in India and is closely monitoring the condition of the injured citizens.

Minister Piah extended condolences to the bereaved family and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family during this difficult period and pray for the swift recovery of those receiving treatment,” he said.

The Ministry of Information extended its sympathy to Deputy Information Minister for Technical Services, Mr. Nat Baijay, who is the nephew to the Mrs. Janjay Roland

Personal Loss for the Ministry of Information

The tragedy has carried an especially personal dimension for Liberia’s Ministry of Information.

Madam Roland was a close relative of Deputy Minister for Technical Services Nat Bayjay, who publicly shared his grief following news of her passing.

In a heartfelt tribute posted on social media, Bayjay described the overwhelming pain her death has inflicted upon the family.

“When some die, they die alone. But when others, like you die, they die along with an entire family. If only you knew what your death has caused us, you would have delayed your departure from us,” he wrote.

His emotional words quickly resonated with many Liberians, reflecting the deep sense of loss felt by those who knew Madam Roland and those who have simply been moved by the circumstances surrounding her death.

Family Announces Passing

An obituary issued by the Roland, Nyuan, and Bayjay families described Madam Roland’s passing as a devastating blow to the family.

According to the announcement, she died in the June 3 fire while accompanying her husband during his medical treatment in India.

The family noted that she was only a few days away from celebrating her 62nd birthday.

An emergency family meeting has already been held, while additional meetings are expected to determine funeral and burial arrangements.

Relatives have called on friends and well-wishers to continue supporting the family during what they describe as one of the most difficult moments in their lives.

India Mourns Alongside Liberia

The tragedy has also prompted an outpouring of sympathy from Indian leaders.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sadness over the loss of life caused by the fire.

“Extremely saddened by the loss of lives due to a tragic fire in Delhi. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery,” Prime Minister Modi said.

His statement was widely welcomed as a gesture of solidarity toward all the families affected by the disaster, including those from Liberia and other countries.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also visited injured victims at Max Hospital, where she assured survivors and their families of government support.

Indian authorities announced financial assistance for victims’ families, including compensation for the next of kin of those who lost their lives and support for those seriously injured.

Horror and Heroism Amid the Flames

While the fire brought unimaginable suffering, it also revealed extraordinary acts of courage and compassion.

Firefighters battled thick smoke and intense flames as they worked to rescue trapped occupants from the building.

More than 40 people were reportedly evacuated during the emergency response.

Among the heroes emerging from the tragedy were local businessman Riyazuddin Mansuri and his son Armaan, who reportedly sacrificed mattresses and bedding worth thousands of dollars to create makeshift landing pads for occupants forced to jump from upper floors to escape the blaze.

Their actions are credited with helping save numerous lives.

Authorities in India have launched a full investigation into the cause of the fire and whether all required safety standards were observed.

A Tragedy That Unites Two Nations

The death of Madam Janjay Roland has become more than a family tragedy.

It has become a moment of shared grief between Liberia and India, two countries linked by decades of friendship, educational exchange, medical cooperation, and people-to-people relations.

For many Liberians, India has long been a destination for specialized medical care, offering hope to patients and families confronting serious health challenges.

That reality makes this tragedy even more painful.

A woman who traveled abroad to support her husband during treatment instead became the victim of a disaster far from home.

Her passing is a reminder of the sacrifices families make for one another and of how quickly life can change.

Today, Liberia mourns alongside the Roland, Nyuan, and Bayjay families.

India mourns alongside the families of all those who perished in the fire.

And together, both nations pray for the survivors still recovering from their injuries.
