MONROVIA — The University of Liberia (UL) is set to officially launch its Division of Athletics and Sports on Friday, May 29, 2026, in what university authorities describe as a major step toward revitalizing sports and athletics development within Liberia’s premier public university.
The launching ceremony will take place at the University’s Capitol Hill Auditorium beginning at 11:00 a.m., and is expected to attract students, faculty members, administrators, sports stakeholders, and invited guests from across the country.
House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon will serve as chief launcher for the occasion, while Bea Mountain Mining Corporation Country Manager Debar W. Allen is expected to serve as co-launcher, according to information released ahead of the event.
University officials say the establishment of the Division of Athletics and Sports forms part of broader efforts to strengthen student engagement, talent development, physical wellness, and institutional participation in national and international sporting activities.
The initiative is also expected to create a more structured framework for organizing university athletics programs, inter-college competitions, sports scholarships, and talent identification opportunities for students.

The launch comes at a time when discussions around sports development and youth empowerment are gaining renewed national attention across Liberia.
UL’s Sporting Legacy and National Impact
Over the years, the University of Liberia has produced several athletes, footballers, and sports administrators who have contributed significantly to Liberia’s sporting landscape.
Many students from UL have participated in national university competitions, community tournaments, and Liberia Football Association-affiliated activities, despite longstanding challenges involving limited funding, inadequate sporting facilities, and insufficient institutional support.
Sports analysts believe the creation of a dedicated Division of Athletics and Sports could help reposition the University as a major hub for youth sports development and academic-athletic excellence.
The move also aligns with growing national calls for stronger investment in school and university sports programs as pathways for youth empowerment, discipline, leadership, and professional development.

Speaker Koon’s Connection to UL
Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon’s involvement in the launch also carries symbolic significance given his long-standing ties to the University of Liberia.
Before entering national politics, Koon reportedly served as a professor at the University’s graduate school and remains one of the institution’s notable alumni and former academic figures.
Since becoming Speaker of the House of Representatives, Koon has repeatedly emphasized youth development, education, and institutional strengthening as important pillars of national progress.

Renewed Focus on Sports Development in Liberia
The launch additionally comes amid renewed national focus on sports infrastructure and athletic development in Liberia.
Recent years have seen increased discussions surrounding the modernization of sports facilities, including ongoing conversations about improving the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex and expanding opportunities for grassroots and school-based sports development across the country.
University authorities believe the new athletics division could help bridge the gap between academics and sports while creating more opportunities for young Liberians to develop their talents both on and off the field.
Organizers say Friday’s launch will outline the Division’s vision, objectives, and future plans for sports programming, student participation, institutional partnerships, and athletic development initiatives at the University of Liberia.
