Calm has now returned to the Sorlumba border post in Foya between Liberia and Guinea

MONROVIA — The Union of Liberian Associations in the Americas (ULAA) has called on the Government of Liberia to launch a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the recent border incident involving Guinean security forces in Lofa County.

In a strongly worded statement, ULAA described the crossing of armed Guinean personnel into Liberian territory as “deeply concerning,” warning that the situation could have broader implications for national security if not thoroughly addressed.

Commendation for Diplomatic Efforts

The organization, which represents Liberians in the diaspora across the Americas, praised Joseph Nyuma Boakai for what it termed “bold and timely steps” in responding to the situation.

ULAA also acknowledged the role of regional leaders, including Mamady Doumbouya and Julius Maada Bio, for their collaborative efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions and promoting a peaceful resolution.

Concerns Over Security Breach

Despite welcoming ongoing diplomatic engagement, ULAA expressed alarm over the circumstances that led to the alleged incursion.

“It is imperative that a thorough and transparent investigation be conducted to determine the root cause of this breach,” the statement emphasized.

The organization warned that failure to properly investigate the incident could expose Liberia to future cross-border violations, potentially more severe than the current situation.

“If overlooked, this situation risks setting a dangerous precedent,” ULAA cautioned.

Call for Special Task Force

To address the matter decisively, ULAA is urging the Liberian government to establish a special investigative task force comprising joint security agencies.

According to the group, the task force should be led by the Ministry of Justice and mandated to:

  • Determine the circumstances surrounding the incident
  • Identify those responsible
  • Recommend measures to prevent recurrence

Impact on Border Communities

ULAA highlighted the lingering fear and uncertainty among residents of Lofa County, particularly in communities near the affected border area.

“The fear and uncertainty caused by this border crossing continue to linger among our fellow citizens,” the organization noted, stressing the need for swift action to reassure affected populations.

A Call to Safeguard Peace

The diaspora body reaffirmed the commitment of Liberians to maintaining peace, urging the government to take all necessary steps to protect the country’s sovereignty and stability.

“Liberians remain committed to preserving the fragile peace we currently enjoy,” the statement said.

Regional Context

The appeal comes amid heightened attention to the Liberia–Guinea border situation, which has drawn responses from both national authorities and regional stakeholders, including the Mano River Union framework that promotes cooperation among Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Côte d’Ivoire.

ULAA concluded by calling for sustained peace and strengthened regional harmony, emphasizing that stability along one border is critical to the entire subregion.
