MONROVIA — Liberia’s partnership with India in capacity building and technical training has reached a new milestone, with 156 Liberian professionals benefiting from specialized programs under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) initiative during the just-ended financial year.

The Embassy of India announced the achievement at the start of the 2026–2027 financial year, describing it as a significant expansion of opportunities for Liberian professionals across key sectors of government.

According to the Embassy, the number of beneficiaries more than doubled the initial allocation of 70 training slots—an increase attributed to strong collaboration with Liberian institutions and growing demand for skills development.

The participants included a wide cross-section of public sector professionals. Two officials attended the prestigious ITEC Executive Course, while 30 professionals from the Ministry of Mines and Energy completed a customized training program. Six members of the National Legislature also benefited from a specialized course in legislative drafting.

In addition, three Liberian officials—from the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC), Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), and the Liberia Maritime Authority—are currently pursuing master’s degrees at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, one of India’s leading academic institutions.

The remaining participants undertook short-term courses in various disciplines, ranging from public administration to technical and engineering fields.

The Embassy described the outcome as “not only a great achievement for the mission but a national one,” underscoring the programme’s growing relevance to Liberia’s development priorities.

Expanding Opportunities

Building on this momentum, the Government of India has allocated 140 training slots for Liberia in the new financial year, signaling continued commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation.

The Embassy is encouraging wider participation, particularly among professionals who have not previously benefited from the programme, and has called on government institutions to disseminate information about the opportunity.

Applicants are advised to submit their applications through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or directly to the Embassy at least two months before the start of their preferred training.

A Pillar of Bilateral Cooperation

The ITEC programme remains a cornerstone of development cooperation between India and Liberia, focusing on capacity building, technology transfer, and institutional strengthening.

Over the years, the initiative has contributed to enhancing technical expertise in critical sectors such as governance, energy, infrastructure, and public administration—areas central to Liberia’s economic transformation agenda.

As Liberia continues to invest in human capital development, officials say programmes like ITEC are playing an increasingly vital role in equipping professionals with the skills needed to drive sustainable growth.

With expanded opportunities in the new fiscal year, both countries appear poised to deepen their cooperation, translating knowledge exchange into tangible development outcomes.
