MONROVIA – The Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) on Monday, May 18, 2026, joined the international community in commemorating the International Day for Women in Maritime with a colorful celebration held at Monrovia City Hall.

The event brought together senior government officials, maritime stakeholders, development partners, and women professionals in the maritime sector to honor and recognize the contributions of women to the growth and advancement of Liberia’s maritime industry.

Delivering the keynote address, Geraldine George, Liberia’s Minister of National Defense, spoke on the global theme: “From Policy to Practice: Advancing Gender for Maritime Excellence.”

Minister George said the observance serves as a powerful reminder of the growing achievements of Liberian women who continue to break barriers and excel in sectors traditionally dominated by men, including the maritime industry.

She stressed that excellence is not determined by gender and called for increased efforts to create opportunities that would enable more women to participate and thrive in the maritime sector.

According to her, the global theme strongly aligns with Liberia’s broader aspirations for inclusiveness, equal participation, and sustainable national development.

Minister George further encouraged young women and girls across Liberia to pursue careers in maritime and other professional fields where women remain underrepresented.

Representing the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR), Mr. Abraham Avi Zaidenberg highlighted the longstanding partnership between LISCR and the Liberian Maritime Program.

He disclosed that more than 7,000 vessels are currently registered under the Liberian flag, making Liberia’s ship registry one of the largest and most respected maritime registries in the world.

Also speaking at the ceremony was Darlington Cheeks, Chief of Office Staff at the Liberia Maritime Authority, who represented LiMA Commissioner/CEO Neto Lighe Sr..

Mr. Cheeks emphasized the vital role women continue to play in strengthening Liberia’s maritime sector and noted that collaboration and teamwork remain essential to achieving both institutional and national success.

The celebration reaffirmed the commitment of the Liberia Maritime Authority and its partners to promoting gender equality, empowering women in maritime, and creating an inclusive environment where women can excel and contribute meaningfully to the continued growth of Liberia’s maritime sector.
