MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Momo Cyrus, Senator of Lofa County, has secured a seat on the Executive Committee of the Liberia Football Association (LFA), vowing to leverage his legislative influence to advocate for increased funding and stronger national support for sports development across Liberia.
Senator Cyrus was elected alongside ten other officials during the LFA Executive Committee elections held on May 15 at the association’s headquarters in Monrovia. Incumbent LFA President Mustapha I. Raji was re-elected unopposed for a third and final term.
Speaking during the election debate, Senator Cyrus highlighted the numerous challenges confronting sports in Liberia while emphasizing the country’s vast potential to compete internationally if meaningful investment is made in the sector.
As Co-Chair of the Senate Committee on Youth and Sports, Cyrus said the future of Liberian sports depends on stronger commitment, collaboration, and sustained support from government, sports administrators, club owners, athletes, and fans.

“This is not where we want Liberian football to be,” Cyrus said. “Many of our sister countries are progressing while we continue to lag behind because of inadequate funding.”
According to him, serving on the LFA Executive Committee will provide him with deeper insight into the realities and operational challenges facing football administration, enabling him to advocate more effectively for increased budgetary support through the Legislature.
“Considering my role as a senator and Co-Chair of the Senate Committee on Youth and Sports, this is a perfect opportunity to understand the problems and elevate them to the national government through the Legislature,” he noted.
Cyrus, who also serves as Chief Executive Officer of Wologizi FC, described inadequate financial support as one of the greatest barriers to the growth of football, basketball, kickball, and other sporting disciplines throughout the country.
He pledged to work closely with Senate Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence and fellow lawmakers to push for increased budgetary allocations for the LFA and the broader sports sector during future national budget discussions.
“Sitting on the Youth and Sports Committee puts me at the table where budget decisions are made. That will allow me to make a strong case for sports at the Legislature,” Cyrus added.
The newly elected Executive Committee member also expressed commitment to strengthening the leadership and institutional capacity of the Liberia Football Association while creating more opportunities for young athletes nationwide.
Beyond government funding, Cyrus said he intends to champion innovative strategies aimed at attracting private sector investment into sports development. He specifically mentioned engaging major concession and investment companies operating in Liberia, including Bea Mountain Mining Corporation, China Union, and ArcelorMittal, to support sports initiatives through their corporate social responsibility programs.

In a further show of commitment, Cyrus pledged to dedicate his entire LFA stipend over the next four years toward sports development programs, with particular focus on women’s football and Liberia’s national teams.
“Under our leadership, the Lone Star will shine through our advocacy for funding,” he declared.
He also praised club owners and sports stakeholders who continue to invest their personal resources into sustaining sports activities in Liberia, saying their contributions deserve greater national recognition and institutional support.
Before his election to the LFA Executive Committee, Cyrus served as Chairman of the Lofa County Sports Steering Committee, where he helped guide the county to six championships in football, basketball, and kickball during the National County Sports Meet.
During his tenure, he also played a key role in providing football boots, jerseys, and footballs for county teams.
As CEO of Wologizi FC, Senator Cyrus further led the club to victory in the 2024/2025 Liberian Second Division League season, securing promotion to Liberia’s First Division League.
