-FIFA Instructor Leads Specialized Training Program to Enhance Officiating Standards in Liberian Football

MONROVIA, Liberia – The Liberia Football Association (LFA) has officially launched the 2026 MA Elite Referees Course, bringing together 30 of the country’s top match officials for an intensive training program aimed at raising refereeing standards and strengthening the quality of football officiating nationwide.

The course, which commenced Tuesday at the LFA Headquarters in Congo Town, has assembled 26 male and four female referees selected from across Liberia to participate in the elite-level capacity-building initiative.

The training program forms part of the LFA’s broader commitment to referee development and football excellence, as the association continues efforts to align local officiating standards with international best practices and FIFA requirements.

Participants began the course with a comprehensive fitness assessment designed to evaluate their physical readiness and ensure they meet the demands of modern football officiating before advancing to the technical and theoretical components of the program.

Focus on Professional Development

According to the LFA, the MA Elite Referees Course is intended to enhance referees’ understanding of the Laws of the Game, improve consistency in decision-making, strengthen match management skills, and boost overall performance on the field.

The program will also focus on developing the physical and mental preparedness required to officiate at the highest levels of domestic and international competition.

Football administrators believe that improving the quality of officiating is essential to maintaining the integrity, fairness, and competitiveness of the sport.

By investing in referee education and development, the LFA aims to ensure that match officials are better equipped to handle the increasing demands of the modern game.

FIFA Instructor Leads Training

The course is being facilitated by FIFA Technical Instructor Al Mohammed Ahmed of Somalia, who is providing expert guidance and instruction throughout the training sessions.

Ahmed is being supported by a team of local instructors who will assist in delivering practical and classroom-based modules covering various aspects of football officiating.

The involvement of a FIFA-accredited instructor underscores the importance of the program and reflects the LFA’s determination to expose Liberian referees to internationally recognized standards and methodologies.

Strengthening Liberian Football

The initiative comes as Liberian football continues to pursue higher standards of professionalism across all levels of the game.

LFA officials have consistently emphasized that quality officiating remains a critical component of football development, helping to promote fair competition, player discipline, and public confidence in match outcomes.

The Elite Referees Course is expected to provide participants with valuable knowledge, practical experience, and updated interpretations of the Laws of the Game, enabling them to perform more effectively in domestic leagues and other competitions.

As the program progresses, organizers hope the training will contribute to producing a stronger pool of referees capable of representing Liberia in regional and international tournaments while elevating the overall standard of officiating within the country.
