–Lone Star Defender Signs Two-Year Deal as Club Strengthens Squad for New Season
DOETINCHEM, Netherlands – Dutch football club De Graafschap has officially announced the signing of Liberian international Mark Pabai on a free transfer, securing the services of the experienced defender ahead of the 2026–27 season.
The 25-year-old right-back has signed a two-year contract, with the club retaining an option to extend the agreement for an additional year.
Pabai’s arrival is regarded as a significant addition to the squad as De Graafschap seeks to strengthen its defensive options and mount a strong challenge in the upcoming campaign.
Club Confident in Pabai’s Qualities
Speaking following the completion of the transfer, De Graafschap Technical Manager Berry Powel expressed confidence that the Liberian international possesses the qualities needed to make an immediate impact.
“We believe that with Mark, we have found a player who holds his own both defensively and offensively,” Powel said.
“Mark possesses those qualities as well as the physical ability to cover the entire right side. He has already gained the necessary experience, including at a European level. We have every confidence that Mark will be of value to our team.”
The club believes Pabai’s versatility, athleticism, and experience across several European leagues will strengthen the squad as preparations continue for the new season.
Journey Through European Football
Pabai began his football development in the youth academy of FC Utrecht, one of the Netherlands’ most respected talent-producing clubs.
After progressing through the youth ranks, he earned promotion to Jong FC Utrecht, where he gained valuable experience competing in the Dutch second division.
His impressive performances eventually secured him a move to Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle, giving him the opportunity to test himself at the highest level of Dutch football.

Seeking broader experience, Pabai later expanded his career beyond the Netherlands, featuring for Italian club SPAL as well as Slovenian outfits NK Tabor Sežana and FC Koper.
His time in multiple European leagues has allowed him to develop into a well-rounded defender capable of adapting to different playing styles and tactical systems.
Impressive Professional Record
Throughout his professional career, Pabai has accumulated valuable experience at both domestic and international levels.
He has made nine appearances in the Dutch Eredivisie, contributing two assists, while also becoming a regular performer in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie, where he has recorded 60 appearances, scoring three goals and providing two assists.
Last season, the Liberian defender also gained continental experience by featuring in the UEFA Conference League qualifying rounds, further enhancing his résumé and exposure to high-level competition.
Boost for Liberia’s National Team
Pabai’s move to De Graafschap is also being viewed positively within Liberian football circles, as another member of the national team continues to establish himself in European football.
The defender has been a regular feature in the Lone Star setup and is regarded as one of Liberia’s promising exports on the international stage.
His continued development in a competitive European environment is expected to benefit both his club career and Liberia’s national team ambitions as the country prepares for future international competitions, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
New Challenge Awaits
For Pabai, the move represents another important chapter in a career that has steadily progressed through some of Europe’s competitive football environments.
Returning to Dutch football with De Graafschap, he will be aiming to use his experience, defensive qualities, and attacking instincts to help the club achieve its objectives in the coming season.
With a new challenge ahead and growing confidence from both club and country, the Liberian defender will be eager to make his mark and continue flying the Liberian flag proudly on the European football stage.
