-EPA Official Arthur Becker to Represent Liberia on NAP Global Network Governing Body for 2026–2028 Term

BONN, GERMANY – Liberia has secured a seat on the Steering Committee of the National Adaptation Plans (NAP) Global Network for the 2026–2028 term, a significant achievement that strengthens the country’s voice in global climate governance and adaptation planning.

The appointment marks a major milestone in Liberia’s growing leadership on climate action and reflects increasing international recognition of the country’s commitment to building resilience against climate change.

Representing Liberia on the Steering Committee will be Arthur R.M. Becker, Director of the Department of Multilateral Environmental Agreements at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Liberia and the country’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Focal Point.

Becker will serve alongside representatives from the Maldives, Mexico, the Central African Republic, Canada, Saint Lucia, Albania, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam, forming a diverse body that reflects the Network’s commitment to inclusive global collaboration on climate adaptation.

The membership brings together representatives from Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Small Island Developing States (SIDS), developing economies, and advanced industrialized nations, creating a platform for broad-based cooperation on one of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Strengthening Global Climate Adaptation Efforts

As the governing body of the NAP Global Network, the Steering Committee is responsible for providing strategic leadership and guidance to advance climate adaptation planning worldwide.

The committee plays a central role in shaping the Network’s priorities, overseeing the implementation of its programs and activities, and supporting efforts to mobilize climate financing for adaptation initiatives.

Its mandate also includes strengthening collaboration among member countries and development partners, promoting the exchange of knowledge and technical expertise, and sharing best practices that help nations prepare for and respond to the growing impacts of climate change.

Steering Committee members are additionally expected to serve as ambassadors for the Network, helping to communicate its objectives and priorities to governments, development partners, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders across different regions.

Opportunity for Liberia to Shape Global Discussions

Liberia’s election to the Steering Committee is expected to provide the country with a stronger platform to influence international climate adaptation policies while showcasing its own experiences in addressing climate-related challenges.

The position will also enable Liberia to learn from the experiences of other countries facing similar environmental threats, including rising temperatures, extreme weather events, coastal erosion, flooding, and threats to food security.

Climate experts note that adaptation planning has become increasingly important for vulnerable countries such as Liberia, where climate change continues to affect agriculture, infrastructure, water resources, biodiversity, and coastal communities.

Through its participation on the Steering Committee, Liberia is expected to contribute to global discussions on resilience-building while advancing national efforts to secure financing and technical support for adaptation programs.

First Meeting Scheduled for June 19

The newly constituted Steering Committee is expected to hold its inaugural meeting virtually on June 19, 2026.

The session will bring together representatives of member countries and partner organizations to discuss strategic priorities, ongoing initiatives, governance matters, and future opportunities for collaboration under the NAP Global Network.

Observers say Liberia’s appointment comes at a critical time when developing countries are increasingly seeking stronger representation in global climate decision-making processes and greater access to climate finance.

For Liberia, the appointment not only reflects growing international confidence in its climate leadership but also reinforces the country’s commitment to sustainable development, environmental protection, and long-term climate resilience.

As climate challenges continue to intensify across Africa and around the world, Liberia’s new role on the Steering Committee is expected to strengthen its ability to advocate for the needs and priorities of vulnerable nations while contributing to global solutions for climate adaptation.
