Oscar Brown, RIA Security Manager, who is at the center of the drugs investigation, has reportedly absconded in China

-Reported Disappearance in China Deepens Mystery as Joint Security Probe Widens into One of Liberia’s Largest Drug Busts

MONROVIA – As Liberian and international investigators intensify efforts to unravel one of the country’s largest-ever cocaine seizures, one name has increasingly moved to the center of public attention: Oscar John Brown, a security official at Roberts International Airport (RIA) who has reportedly become a key person of interest in the ongoing investigation.

Brown’s name surfaced publicly in the days following the June 8 seizure of 237.6 kilograms of cocaine, valued at more than US$19 million, at the cargo terminal of Roberts International Airport. The drugs were reportedly discovered after security personnel detected discrepancies in shipping documentation, triggering a physical inspection that exposed what authorities have described as a sophisticated transnational trafficking operation.

The seizure has since evolved from a narcotics investigation into what the Government of Liberia has characterized as a national security matter involving multiple domestic and international law enforcement agencies.

Spotlight Falls on Airport Security

While investigators have remained tight-lipped about the identities of many individuals under scrutiny, several Liberian media outlets and social media platforms have reported that Brown, who served within RIA’s security apparatus, is among those being investigated in connection with the movement of suspicious cargo through the airport.

Some reports have alleged that Brown was involved in the screening process of cargo shipments linked to the broader investigation, although authorities have not publicly disclosed the extent of his involvement or whether he has been formally accused of wrongdoing.

The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) and Joint Security have repeatedly stated that the investigation remains active and that names have not been officially released in order to protect the integrity of the probe.

Reported Disappearance in China

The case took a dramatic turn this week when reports emerged that Brown had allegedly left a short-term security training program in China and could not be located.

According to reports published by Liberian media and shared widely on social media, the Liberian Embassy in Beijing reportedly issued notices seeking assistance in locating Brown after he allegedly failed to return from training. Chinese authorities were also said to have been notified of the situation.

A report published Thursday by KNews Online stated that Brown’s disappearance occurred while investigations into the cocaine seizure were ongoing, although neither Liberian nor Chinese authorities have publicly linked his reported absence to criminal conduct.

Multiple media reports have further claimed that Liberian officials are attempting to determine whether Brown remains in China or has traveled elsewhere.

The US$19.2 Million Cocaine Seizure

The investigation stems from the interception of 198 compressed plates of cocaine discovered among cargo prepared for an international flight departing Liberia.

Authorities say the shipment, weighing approximately 237.6 kilograms, was concealed in cargo boxes and was allegedly destined for Europe. Intelligence agencies from Belgium, the United States, Britain, Denmark, and other international partners have reportedly joined Liberian authorities in tracing the origins of the shipment and identifying those responsible for financing and facilitating the operation.

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has since described the seizure as one of the largest narcotics interdictions in Liberia’s history and pledged that no individual, regardless of status or position, would be shielded from investigation. The President has directed a Joint Security operation involving the LDEA, Liberia National Police, National Security Agency, Financial Intelligence Agency, Liberia Immigration Service, and other institutions.

Investigation Expands

Reports indicate that investigators have widened the scope of the probe to include several airport employees and individuals linked to cargo handling and security operations at RIA. Some media reports claim that six government employees have already been detained for questioning, although authorities have not publicly released all names or specific charges.

Security experts say investigators are focusing not only on the individuals directly involved in transporting the drugs but also on identifying the financiers, facilitators, and transnational criminal networks behind the operation.

More Questions Than Answers

For now, many questions surrounding Oscar Brown remain unanswered.

Was he simply a witness, a person of interest, or a suspect? Why did he reportedly leave his training program in China? What role, if any, did he play in the movement of cargo through Roberts International Airport?

Those answers will likely emerge only as investigators complete what has become one of the most consequential narcotics investigations in Liberia’s recent history.

Until then, authorities continue to urge patience while evidence is gathered and international partners work alongside Liberian security agencies to dismantle what officials believe may be a sophisticated transnational drug trafficking network.
