MONROVIA, Liberia — Liberia has officially crossed the US$1 billion domestic revenue mark for the first time in its history, with the latest Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) dashboard showing total year-to-date domestic revenue of US$1,000,479,141.45.
The milestone was announced Monday by Finance and Development Planning Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan while delivering remarks as commencement speaker at the 17th Commencement Convocation of Tubman University in Maryland County.
“Few minutes ago, while sitting here, I got a message that Liberia, your country, my country, has for the first now just crossed the one-billion-dollar domestic revenue intake,” Ngafuan told the gathering.
Although the Finance Minister did not initially provide the exact collection figure, the latest LRA Revenue Performance Dashboard now confirms that Liberia had collected US$1,000,479,141.45 in consolidated domestic revenue.
The dashboard, updated for September 14, 2026, declares: “Liberia has made history with the country’s first collection of one billion United States dollars in revenue.”
Historic Breakthrough
The achievement comes just three days after information obtained by The Liberian Post showed that domestic revenue had reached US$997.4 million as of Friday, September 11, leaving the country only US$2.6 million short of the historic threshold.
Liberia has now surpassed that gap, crossing the billion-dollar mark by US$479,141.45.
The latest figure also represents a remarkable increase from the US$954.7 million reported by the LRA on September 2 and approximately US$904.7 million recorded on August 18.
A Two-Year Revenue Surge
The billion-dollar milestone caps a rapid expansion in Liberia’s domestic revenue collections.
Domestic revenue rose from approximately US$699 million in 2024 to US$847.7 million in 2025, before climbing above US$900 million in August 2026.
Finance Minister Ngafuan had repeatedly projected that Liberia would cross the billion-dollar threshold in September, describing the achievement as an important demonstration of the country’s growing capacity to mobilize resources domestically.
Last week, Ngafuan challenged Liberia not to stop at US$1 billion, saying the country must “sprint in the billions.”
‘Not Borrowed Funds’
In his remarks at Tubman University, Ngafuan emphasized that the milestone represents locally generated resources.
“Yes, domestic revenue. We’re not talking about borrowed funds. We’re not talking about donor money,” he said during a recent visit to Jackson F. Doe Referral Hospital in Nimba County.
Ngafuan has repeatedly linked stronger domestic revenue to Liberia’s ability to finance its development priorities and reduce dependence on external assistance.
The milestone comes amid efforts by the LRA to strengthen tax compliance, modernize revenue administration, expand digital systems and reduce revenue leakages.
What Comes Next
While crossing US$1 billion marks an unprecedented achievement, the milestone also raises expectations over how the additional resources will be used.
The Boakai administration has repeatedly linked increased domestic revenue to the financing of roads, healthcare, education, agriculture, electricity and other priorities under the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID).
The larger challenge now will be sustaining the revenue gains and ensuring that the increased fiscal capacity translates into measurable improvements in the lives of Liberians.
With the LRA dashboard now recording US$1,000,479,141.45, September 14, 2026, officially enters Liberia’s fiscal history as the day the country crossed the US$1 billion domestic revenue milestone for the first time.
