Association Says New Law Could Strengthen Sports Financing and Expand Opportunities for Young Athletes

MONROVIA, Liberia: The Liberia National Handball Association has welcomed President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s signing of the National Sports Fund Act into law, describing the legislation as an important step toward strengthening and sustainably financing Liberia’s multi-discipline sports sector.

The Association said the new law establishes a framework for providing more sustainable support to sports federations while creating greater opportunities for young Liberian athletes to develop and compete.

The handball body praised President Boakai for approving the legislation, which it said could help address longstanding financing challenges within Liberia’s sporting community.

The Association also commended River Gee County Senator Jonathan Boycharles Sogbie for his role in advancing the legislation through the legislative process.

Handball Development Expected to Benefit

According to the Association, the National Sports Fund Act could have a direct impact on the development of handball across Liberia by supporting investment in key areas of the sport.

These include sports infrastructure, grassroots talent development, national teams and training for technical officials.

The Association said sustained investment in these areas would help create a stronger development pathway for young athletes while improving Liberia’s ability to prepare competitive national teams.

The legislation is also expected to provide a broader financing framework for sports disciplines beyond handball, potentially allowing federations to plan and implement development programs with greater financial stability.

Association Pledges Accountability

The Liberia National Handball Association said it remains committed to working with the newly established authority responsible for implementing the sports fund.

The Association emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability and responsible management of resources as the new framework takes effect.

It said effective implementation of the law will be critical to ensuring that the resources made available through the National Sports Fund translate into tangible improvements for athletes, coaches, technical officials and sports federations across Liberia.

The Association described the legislation as an opportunity to move Liberia’s sports sector toward a more sustainable development model and reaffirmed its commitment to contributing to the growth of handball and sports generally.
