President of the Press Union of Liberia, Mr. Julius Kanubah

MONROVIA — The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has officially announced a call for entries for its 2025 National Media Awards, inviting journalists and media institutions across the country to submit their work for recognition.

According to a statement issued on April 22, 2026, the awards will cover journalistic work produced between January 1 and December 31, 2025, and are aimed at promoting excellence, professionalism, and innovation in Liberia’s media sector.

Submission Window Opens

The PUL said submissions opened on April 21 and will close on May 1, 2026, at 11:59 PM, stressing that late entries will not be accepted.

Eligible applicants include both institutionally affiliated journalists and freelancers working across broadcast, print, and digital platforms, provided they are members of the Union.

Each journalist is permitted to submit a maximum of two entries, with strict requirements that each submission must show proof of publication or broadcast within the eligibility period.

Entries can be submitted physically at the PUL headquarters in Sinkor or electronically via email, WhatsApp, or file-sharing platforms.

Wide Range of Categories

This year’s awards feature an extensive list of categories recognizing excellence in both individual and institutional journalism.

Individual categories include Investigative Reporter of the Year, Legislative Reporter of the Year, Judicial Reporter of the Year, Development Reporter of the Year, and Journalist of the Year, among others.

The awards also recognize emerging talent through categories such as Young Journalist of the Year, while specialized areas like environmental reporting, human rights coverage, and business journalism are also highlighted.

Institutional awards will honor media organizations for overall excellence, including Radio Station of the Year, Television Station of the Year, Newspaper of the Year, and Digital Media of the Year.

Focus on Public Interest Journalism

The PUL emphasized that entries will be judged based on key criteria including accuracy, rigor, public interest impact, ethical standards, and innovation.

Investigative reporting, in particular, is expected to focus on exposing corruption, abuse of power, and social injustices, while other categories will assess contributions to governance, democracy, and national development.

The Union noted that a dedicated Awards Committee will review all submissions and also identify candidates for certain categories that do not require direct entry.

Promoting Media Excellence

The National Media Awards form part of the PUL’s broader mandate to strengthen journalism in Liberia, as outlined in its constitution, which emphasizes professionalism and social responsibility in support of democracy and press freedom.

The Union said the awards continue to serve as a platform to celebrate impactful storytelling and encourage higher standards across the media landscape.

Looking Ahead

Winners are expected to receive a range of prizes, including cash awards, professional equipment, and recognition plaques, while a special Lifetime Champion of Freedom honor will be awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to journalism and free expression.

Media practitioners across Liberia are now gearing up to submit their best work, as competition intensifies for one of the country’s most prestigious journalism honors.
