Acting NEC Chairperson Jonathan K. Weedor

MONROVIA, Liberia – The Liberian Senate has officially confirmed Jonathan K. Weedor as Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), paving the way for him to formally lead the country’s electoral body.

The confirmation came on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, when senators overwhelmingly endorsed Mr. Weedor’s nomination, granting him 23 votes in favor out of the 30 senators present. The decision followed a favorable recommendation from the Senate Committee on Autonomous Agencies.

With his confirmation, Chairperson Weedor will lead the National Elections Commission alongside the six other members of the Board of Commissioners (BoC), overseeing the administration of elections and other electoral activities across Liberia.

As he assumes the leadership of the Commission, Weedor has reaffirmed his commitment to protecting the will of the Liberian people and strengthening the credibility, transparency, and integrity of the country’s electoral process.

President has nominated Mr. Jonathan K. Weedor (Middle) to replace Madam Davidetta Browne-Lansanah who resigned from the Chairperson position at the National Elections Commission (NEC)

During his recent confirmation hearing before the Senate, he pledged to uphold what he described as “non-negotiable principles,” including strict adherence to the Elections Law, collective institutional responsibility, and meaningful engagement with all electoral stakeholders.

A seasoned elections administrator, Weedor emphasized that his leadership would be guided by the rule of law and strengthened through close collaboration with fellow commissioners, NEC staff, political parties, civil society organizations, development partners, the media, and the Liberian people.

The National Elections Commission remains one of Liberia’s most important democratic institutions, charged with conducting elections and referenda while safeguarding the integrity of the country’s democratic process.

Political observers say Weedor’s confirmation comes at a critical time as Liberia continues efforts to strengthen democratic governance and public confidence in its electoral institutions.
