
ABUJA, NIGERIA – Representatives from member states gathered this week for the Regional ECOWAS Disease Control and Surveillance Technical Advisor Committee Meeting to discuss crucial strategies for public health safety across the West African region.
At the forefront of the discussions was Liberia, represented by the head of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), who emphasized the importance of collaboration in combating the threats posed by infectious diseases.
The meeting served as a platform to address ongoing challenges in outbreak preparedness and response, with member states sharing their experiences and best practices.
Liberia highlighted the critical role of PlantHealth within the OneHealth framework, underscoring the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health in tackling disease threats.
Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, a prominent public health figure in Liberia, echoed these sentiments, calling for increased advocacy for research and development within Africa.
He stressed the importance of manufacturing diagnostics and vaccines on the continent to enhance self-reliance and ensure timely responses to public health emergencies.
The discussions also included focused efforts on combating diseases such as Mpox and Lassa fever, with Liberia taking a strong stance on initiatives aimed at stopping the spread of these infectious diseases.
The country’s commitment to improving public health infrastructure and response capabilities was evident as representatives shared strategic plans for enhancing regional collaboration.
As the meeting concluded, participants reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening disease surveillance and control measures throughout West Africa, ensuring a safer public health landscape for all member states.
