Prominent Guinean opposition figure Cellou Dalein Diallo has sharply criticized President Mamady Doumbouya

MONROVIA/CONAKRY — Prominent Guinean opposition figure Cellou Dalein Diallo has sharply criticized President Mamady Doumbouya, accusing him of deliberately stoking border tensions with neighboring countries, including Liberia, as a strategy to deflect attention from mounting domestic challenges.

In a strongly worded statement, Diallo condemned what he described as the “illegal occupation” of Liberian territory by Guinean forces, warning that such actions risk undermining regional peace and stability.

Allegations of Political Diversion

According to Diallo, the Guinean government is allegedly manufacturing external crises to distract from internal governance issues, including economic struggles and corruption allegations.

He claimed that tensions along Guinea’s borders with Liberia and Sierra Leone are being used as a “survival mechanism” by the military-led government amid growing scrutiny over its leadership.

Critics within Guinea, he said, believe the administration is attempting to shift public focus away from domestic concerns—particularly allegations involving tens of millions of dollars linked to the Simandou iron ore project.

Claims of Border Incursions

Diallo further accused Guinean troops of acting aggressively in disputed border areas, citing reports of incursions into neighboring territories.

Among the allegations are claims that Guinean soldiers entered Liberian territory and removed the Liberian flag—actions the opposition leader described as provocative and unacceptable.

Such incidents, he warned, could escalate tensions in the Mano River Union region if not addressed through diplomacy.

Concerns Over Regional Security

The opposition leader also raised concerns about reports of detentions involving security personnel from neighboring countries, describing such actions as reckless and a threat to regional cooperation.

He cautioned that these developments could strain longstanding ties between Guinea and its neighbors, particularly Liberia, with whom it shares deep historical, cultural, and economic connections.

Flashback: On that day, when the Guinean army crossed over and hoisted their country’s flag on Liberian soil, brave young Liberian men stood in their faces, reclaimed their land and planted the tri-colored Liberian flag and sang the national anthem

Accusations of Authoritarian Tactics

Diallo did not stop at foreign policy, accusing President Doumbouya of failing to honor commitments to return Guinea to civilian rule following the 2021 military takeover.

He alleged that the government is using heightened border tensions as a pretext to suppress media freedoms and weaken democratic accountability at home.

According to the opposition, military deployments near border regions are being leveraged to consolidate power and intimidate both domestic critics and neighboring states.

Calls for Restraint and Dialogue

The statement comes at a time of heightened concern in Liberia over reports of Guinean troop movements in Lofa County, which have already prompted diplomatic engagement at the highest levels, including meetings involving regional leaders.

While Liberian authorities have emphasized dialogue and peaceful resolution, Diallo’s remarks add a new dimension to the situation—highlighting internal dissent within Guinea over the handling of the crisis.

Observers say the unfolding developments underscore the fragile balance between domestic politics and regional security in West Africa, where border disputes can quickly escalate if not carefully managed.

For now, both Liberia and Guinea remain under pressure to de-escalate tensions and prioritize diplomacy, even as political voices on both sides grow increasingly vocal.

Mr. Cellou Dalein Diallo

Below is the statement in French attributed to Mr. Cellou Dalien Diallo:
