MONROVIA – The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS) is strengthening efforts to create more opportunities for young Liberian athletes by promoting pathways that combine athletic development with access to higher education.
As part of this commitment, the Ministry recently held discussions with Flames Basketball Academy and Coach Tarlouh Gasque on expanding opportunities for talented Liberian athletes to pursue university education and professional sporting careers abroad.
During the meeting, Coach Gasque highlighted the success of her collaboration with Flames Basketball Academy, which has provided basketball training, mentorship, and talent identification for 32 female basketball players across Liberia.
She also presented the results of her recent assessment of 10 female athletes currently competing in the Liberia Basketball Association (LBA). Based on that evaluation, two players have been awarded scholarships to Montgomery College, where Coach Gasque serves as Athletics Director. The scholarships will enable the young athletes to pursue higher education while continuing to develop their basketball careers.
Discussions also centered on expanding the initiative beyond basketball by introducing a similar academic preparation program for female footballers. The proposed program aims to improve the academic readiness of talented athletes, increasing their eligibility for university scholarships and international sporting opportunities.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to building strategic partnerships that empower Liberia’s youth through sports, education, and leadership development. By working alongside Flames Basketball Academy and international partners such as Coach Gasque, the Ministry hopes to open more doors for young Liberians to excel both on the field of play and in the classroom.
The initiative reflects the Ministry’s broader vision of using sports as a vehicle for educational advancement, personal growth, and international exposure—particularly for girls and young women—while creating sustainable pathways to leadership and lifelong success.
