MONROVIA – The Liberia Airport Authority, in collaboration with the Liberia Civil Aviation Authority, has announced the successful commissioning and operational activation of a new Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Automatic Weather Observation System (AWOS) at Roberts International Airport under Phase One of the INTELCAN Navigation Aids Modernization Project.

According to the LAA, the systems were officially flight-calibrated and commissioned with technical support from the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, whose expertise and partnership played a significant role in the successful completion of the project.

Authorities described the development as a major milestone in Liberia’s aviation infrastructure modernization efforts and a critical step toward improving flight safety and operational reliability at the country’s main international gateway.

The newly commissioned Instrument Landing System is expected to significantly improve aircraft approach and landing capabilities at Roberts International Airport, especially during periods of low visibility, heavy rainfall, and adverse weather conditions.

Meanwhile, the Automatic Weather Observation System will provide real-time meteorological data to pilots and air traffic controllers, helping to improve aviation safety, operational efficiency, and reliability of flight operations.

The Liberia Airport Authority stated that the project demonstrates the Government of Liberia’s continued commitment to achieving full compliance with standards and recommended practices established by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

According to the LAA, the operationalization of the systems directly addresses one of the Significant Safety Concerns previously identified by ICAO during Liberia’s last aviation safety oversight audit.

Officials say the development strengthens Liberia’s aviation safety oversight framework while supporting ongoing aerodrome certification and broader aviation modernization initiatives.

The airport authority also expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, INTELCAN Technosystems Inc., the Liberia Civil Aviation Authority, and other stakeholders whose technical collaboration contributed to the successful implementation of the project.

Since assuming office as Managing Director of the Liberia Airport Authority, Ernest R. Hughes has repeatedly emphasized safety, security, and improved customer relations as key priorities of his administration.

According to the LAA, the modernization initiative aligns with efforts to transform Roberts International Airport into a preferred regional aviation hub and improve the overall travel experience for passengers and airline operators.

The authority also commended the airport’s Communication, Navigation, and Surveillance (CNS) Department for what it described as professionalism, technical competence, and unwavering commitment throughout the installation, testing, coordination, and commissioning phases of the project.

“The dedication and hard work of the CNS Department played a pivotal role in the successful implementation of this critical national aviation infrastructure project,” the statement noted.

Liberia’s aviation sector has in recent years undergone gradual modernization efforts aimed at improving compliance with international aviation standards, enhancing airport infrastructure, strengthening safety oversight, and attracting increased international air traffic.

Authorities say the commissioning of the ILS and AWOS systems marks another important step toward enhancing aviation safety, security, and operational excellence in Liberia.
