TAF Africa Global CEO, Mustapha Njie presents a booklet to Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah

MONROVIA — The Government of Liberia has formally unveiled a major private-sector housing initiative as TAF Africa Global begins a high-level investment mission in the country aimed at tackling Liberia’s housing deficit and accelerating urban development.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing on Tuesday, Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah confirmed that the visit by TAF Africa Global, led by its Chief Executive Officer Mustapha “TAF” Njie, follows a direct invitation from President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.

The initiative centers on a proposed 5,000-unit affordable housing and smart city project to be developed on approximately 500 hectares of land near Monrovia, marking what officials describe as a transformative step in Liberia’s urban development agenda.

“This week-long engagement is designed to directly address Liberia’s housing deficit, generate employment, and upgrade critical infrastructure,” Minister Piah said during the briefing.

“We Have Already Started”

Taking the podium, Njie signaled urgency and commitment, declaring that his company is ready to move swiftly from discussions to implementation.

“Yesterday (on Monday), the first question that the President asked was, ‘When are you going to start?’ And my response was, ‘Yesterday,’” Njie told journalists.

He emphasized that TAF Africa Global has already deployed a team on the ground to begin assessments, register a local entity, and initiate feasibility studies.

Jobs, Housing, and Diaspora Investment

Njie outlined the expected benefits of the project, stressing that beyond housing delivery, the initiative will significantly boost employment and economic activity.

“For every house that we build, we create 25 direct jobs… and even more indirect jobs,” he said, citing opportunities for contractors, suppliers, and small businesses.

He added that the project will also target Liberians in the diaspora, providing structured opportunities for home ownership and investment back home.

Addressing Concerns and Ensuring Transparency

Responding to concerns about land ownership and allegations from previous projects in other countries, Njie dismissed the claims as unproven.

“Allegations are allegations until proven right… for 26 years, we have never been dragged into any legal trouble regarding land,” he said, assuring that all developments in Liberia will follow due legal process through government institutions.

He stressed that TAF does not acquire land independently but works strictly through government allocation and regulatory frameworks.

A Public-Private Partnership Model

Njie revealed that the project will be structured as a public-private partnership, with the Liberian government holding a stake in the venture.

“This is not 100 percent privately owned… the government will also have shares in this business,” he said, describing it as a direct benefit to the Liberian people.

He further noted that the development model will prioritize “live, work, and play” communities, designed to reduce congestion in central Monrovia by creating self-sustaining urban hubs.

Looking Ahead

The investment mission is expected to conclude with feasibility studies, site assessments, and formal agreements, including a Memorandum of Understanding.

If implemented, the project could represent one of Liberia’s most ambitious housing initiatives in recent history, signaling renewed confidence in the country’s investment climate.
