MONROVIA — The ruling Unity Party (UP) has announced with profound sorrow the passing of Ambassador-designate George G. Solo, describing his death as a significant loss to Liberia’s diplomatic and political landscape.
In an official statement issued Sunday, the party said Solo, who had been appointed Liberia’s Ambassador to Italy in August 2025, died while in transit to the United States. He reportedly suffered a medical emergency mid-flight aboard a Royal Air Maroc aircraft, Flight AT200, en route from Casablanca to New York.

According to accounts from Samuel Dahn (Dan Sosa) familiar with the incident, Solo began experiencing distress several hours into the journey. Among those on board, Dahn’s swift intervention has since drawn public attention. Dahn is said to have been one of the first responders, assisting flight attendants and medical personnel in attempting to stabilize the ambassador-designate.
Witnesses say Dahn remained at Solo’s side throughout the ordeal, helping administer basic emergency support as the crew made urgent appeals for medical assistance among passengers. Despite these efforts and the involvement of trained physicians on board, Solo could not be revived.

The Unity Party, in its statement, praised Solo’s lifelong commitment to national service, highlighting his role during the 2023 elections and his alignment with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr.’s “Rescue Mission” agenda.
“Hon. Solo demonstrated profound commitment to Liberia’s progress and brought visionary leadership to our political discourse,” the statement noted. “His transition from a partisan leader to a diplomat reflected his evolution into a statesman who placed Liberia above all else.”

Before his diplomatic nomination, Solo was widely regarded as a strong political voice and an advocate for governance reforms. His appointment to represent Liberia in Italy was seen as recognition of his experience and dedication to public service.
The party also extended condolences to the Solo family, residents of Grand Gedeh County, and the broader Liberian public, calling for national reflection during what it described as “a difficult period of mourning.”

“As we are reminded by Ecclesiastes 3:1, there is a time for everything,” the statement read. “We ask all partisans and well-wishers to keep his family in their prayers.”
Solo’s passing has triggered an outpouring of tributes from political figures, diplomats, and citizens, many of whom have hailed his contributions to national dialogue and governance.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
